Let φ:[n]→[r]\varphi : [n] \to [r]φ:[n]→[r] be a labelling with every cluster nonempty, nk=∣{i:φ(i)=k}∣>0n_k = |\{i : \varphi(i) = k\}| > 0nk=∣{i:φ(i)=k}∣>0. Let X0X^0X0 be the true clustering matrix (Xij0=1X^0_{ij} = 1Xij0=1 iff φ(i)=φ(j)\varphi(i)=\varphi(j)φ(i)=φ(j)) and U0=Z0 Diag(1/n1,…,1/nr)U^0 = Z^0\,\mathrm{Diag}(1/\sqrt{n_1},\dots,1/\sqrt{n_r})U0=Z0Diag(1/n1,…,1/nr). Then

  1. the columns of U0U^0U0 are orthonormal top-rrr eigenvectors of X0X^0X0, with eigenvalues the cluster sizes:
(U0)⊤U0=Ir,X0U0=U0 Diag(n1,…,nr),(U^0)^\top U^0 = I_r, \qquad X^0 U^0 = U^0\,\mathrm{Diag}(n_1,\dots,n_r),(U0)⊤U0=Ir,X0U0=U0Diag(n1,…,nr),

and v⊤X0v≤nk v⊤vv^\top X^0 v \le n_k\, v^\top vv⊤X0v≤nkv⊤v for every kkk and every v⊥col(U0)v \perp \mathrm{col}(U^0)v⊥col(U0); 2. X0v=0X^0 v = 0X0v=0 for every vvv orthogonal to the columns of U0U^0U0.

Together these say that the spectrum of X0X^0X0 is n1,…,nrn_1,\dots,n_rn1,…,nr and then 000, so the gap between the rrr-th and the (r+1)(r+1)(r+1)-th eigenvalue is nmin⁡n_{\min}nmin: step (ii) of (G.6).

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
