Let Y=(Yn)n≥0Y=(Y_n)_{n\ge 0}Y=(Yn)n≥0 be a measurable, centered, strictly stationary real sequence on a probability space (Ω,F,P)(\Omega,\mathcal F,P)(Ω,F,P) whose strong mixing coefficients decay exponentially,

α(n)≤c a n(0≤a<1),\alpha(n)\le c\,a^{\,n}\qquad (0\le a<1),α(n)≤can(0≤a<1),

and which satisfies the moment condition E[Y02log⁡+∣Y0∣]<∞E[Y_0^2\log^+|Y_0|]<\inftyE[Y02log+∣Y0∣]<∞. Assume in addition that the positive-lag autocovariance series ∑k≥1E[Y0Yk]\sum_{k\ge1}E[Y_0Y_{k}]∑k≥1E[Y0Yk] converges and that the asymptotic variance

σ2=E[Y02]+2∑k≥1E[Y0Yk]\sigma^2=E[Y_0^2]+2\sum_{k\ge1}E[Y_0Y_k]σ2=E[Y02]+2k≥1∑E[Y0Yk]

is strictly positive. Write Sn=∑i<nYiS_n=\sum_{i<n}Y_iSn=∑i<nYi and σn2=E[Sn2]\sigma_n^2=E[S_n^2]σn2=E[Sn2]. Then the normalized squares are uniformly integrable:

{Sn2σn2  :  n≥1} is uniformly integrable.\Bigl\{\frac{S_n^2}{\sigma_n^2}\;:\;n\ge1\Bigr\}\ \text{is uniformly integrable.}{σn2Sn2:n≥1} is uniformly integrable.

This is the analytic content of the Doukhan–Massart–Rio central limit theorem. Their theorem is proved by verifying exactly this uniform-integrability condition, which for a strongly mixing centered stationary square-integrable sequence with σn2→∞\sigma_n^2\to\inftyσn2→∞ is equivalent to the central limit theorem Sn/σn→dN(0,1)S_n/\sigma_n\to_d N(0,1)Sn/σn→dN(0,1) by the Cogburn–Denker–Mori–Yoshihara characterization (the mission's Theorem 3). Isolating it therefore separates the whole probabilistic difficulty of Jones's Theorem 6 from the two soft steps that surround it: identification of the limiting variance, σn2/n→σ2\sigma_n^2/n\to\sigma^2σn2/n→σ2, and the change of normalization from σn\sigma_nσn to n\sqrt nn.

In Doukhan, Massart and Rio the hypothesis is stated in the sharp quantile form ∫01α−1(u)Q2(u) du<∞\int_0^1\alpha^{-1}(u)Q^2(u)\,du<\infty∫01α−1(u)Q2(u)du<∞, where QQQ is the quantile function of ∣Y0∣|Y_0|∣Y0∣ and α−1\alpha^{-1}α−1 the càdlàg inverse of the mixing-rate function. Under an exponential rate one has α−1(u)=O(1+log⁡+(1/u))\alpha^{-1}(u)=O(1+\log^+(1/u))α−1(u)=O(1+log+(1/u)), and the integral condition then reduces to E[Y02log⁡+∣Y0∣]<∞E[Y_0^2\log^+|Y_0|]<\inftyE[Y02log+∣Y0∣]<∞; the statement above is that special case, which is the form in which Jones quotes the result.

Formalization Note Sequences are indexed from 000, so Sn=Y0+⋯+Yn−1S_n=Y_0+\dots+Y_{n-1}Sn=Y0+⋯+Yn−1; for the finitely many indices with σn=0\sigma_n=0σn=0 the normalized quantity is read as 000 (division by zero). Uniform integrability is meant in the L1L^1L1 sense. The hypotheses on the autocovariance series and on σ2\sigma^2σ2 are carried explicitly, matching the companion statement for ρ\rhoρ-mixing sequences.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
