Let n≥1n\ge 1n≥1 and let p=(p1,…,pn)p=(p_1,\dots,p_n)p=(p1,…,pn) be an injective configuration of nnn points in the plane, with image P={p1,…,pn}P=\{p_1,\dots,p_n\}P={p1,…,pn}. Assume that no four points of PPP lie on a common circle. Let RRR be the set of distances ∣x−y∣|x-y|∣x−y∣ with x,y∈Px,y\in Px,y∈P and x≠yx\ne yx=y, and let D(P)=∣R∣D(P)=|R|D(P)=∣R∣ be the number of distinct distances determined by PPP. Put

c=1n∑j=1npj,M=∑i=1n∣pi−c∣2,ρ2=1n(3∑r∈Rr2−M).c=\frac1n\sum_{j=1}^n p_j,\qquad M=\sum_{i=1}^n |p_i-c|^2,\qquad \rho^2=\frac1n\Bigl(3\sum_{r\in R} r^2-M\Bigr).c=n1j=1∑npj,M=i=1∑n∣pi−c∣2,ρ2=n1(3r∈R∑r2−M).

If δ\deltaδ is a real number with D(P)≤(1/3+δ) nD(P)\le(1/3+\delta)\,nD(P)≤(1/3+δ)n, then every index iii satisfies

ρ2(1−12δ−4n)≤∣pi−c∣2≤ρ2.\rho^2\Bigl(1-12\delta-\frac4n\Bigr)\le |p_i-c|^2\le \rho^2 .ρ2(1−12δ−n4)≤∣pi−c∣2≤ρ2.

A circle about a point of PPP contains at most three other points of PPP, so 3D(P)≥n−13D(P)\ge n-13D(P)≥n−1. The theorem is a stability statement for this bound: when D(P)D(P)D(P) is at most (1/3+δ)n(1/3+\delta)n(1/3+δ)n, all points lie in an annulus about the centroid of relative squared width 12δ+4/n12\delta+4/n12δ+4/n. No hypothesis on collinear points is used.

Formalization Note Here ccc is configCentroid p, MMM is centroidSquaredMass p, ρ2\rho^2ρ2 is distanceAnnulusRadiusSq p, and RRR is OrderedDistanceValues p, the set of values ∣pi−pj∣|p_i-p_j|∣pi−pj∣ with i≠ji\ne ji=j, which is the distance set of PPP because ppp is injective. D(P)D(P)D(P) is NumDistances p. "On a common circle" is Mathlib's Cospherical in the Euclidean plane, applied to four-element subsets of PPP.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
