Let (λ,ρ)(\lambda,\rho)(λ,ρ) be a Markov chain choice model satisfying the standing assumptions, let network data TTT, ccc, aaa, rrr be given, and let (x^,z^)(\hat x,\hat z)(x^,z^) be an optimal solution of the (Reduced) linear program. Run the Dimension Reduction algorithm from (x1,z1)=(x^,z^)(x^1,z^1)=(\hat x,\hat z)(x1,z1)=(x^,z^), producing subsets S1,S2,…S^1,S^2,\dotsS1,S2,… and scalars α1,α2,…\alpha^1,\alpha^2,\dotsα1,α2,…, and let

γk=(1−α1)⋯(1−αk−1) αk.\gamma^k=(1-\alpha^1)\cdots(1-\alpha^{k-1})\,\alpha^k .γk=(1−α1)⋯(1−αk−1)αk.

Then:

  1. the algorithm stops, and it does so after at most n+1n+1n+1 iterations: its first stopping iteration KKK satisfies 1≤K≤n+11\le K\le n+11≤K≤n+1;
  2. if the algorithm stops at iteration KKK (and not before), then
x^=∑k=1KγkPSk,z^=∑k=1KγkRSk,∑k=1Kγk=1,\hat x=\sum_{k=1}^K\gamma^kP_{S^k},\qquad \hat z=\sum_{k=1}^K\gamma^kR_{S^k},\qquad \sum_{k=1}^K\gamma^k=1,x^=k=1∑KγkPSk,z^=k=1∑KγkRSk,k=1∑Kγk=1,

and the generated subsets are nested: S1⊇S2⊇⋯⊇SKS^1\supseteq S^2\supseteq\cdots\supseteq S^KS1⊇S2⊇⋯⊇SK.

Combined with the equivalence of the (Reduced) and (Choice Based) linear programs, this shows that an optimal solution of the (Choice Based) program can be recovered from the (Reduced) optimum and randomizes over at most n+1n+1n+1 nested offer sets.

Formalization Note "The algorithm stops at iteration KKK" is the first KKK with SK=∅S^K=\emptysetSK=∅ or αK=1\alpha^K=1αK=1; iterates after it are never referenced. The paper writes ⊃\supset⊃ for (not necessarily strict) inclusion.

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
