Let (Ω,ΓD,ΓN,dΓ)(\Omega, \Gamma_D, \Gamma_N, d\Gamma)(Ω,ΓD,ΓN,dΓ) be a mixed domain, let 0<μ1<μ20 < \mu_1 < \mu_20<μ1<μ2, and put s=μ22−μ12s = \sqrt{\mu_2^2-\mu_1^2}s=μ22−μ12. Let V\mathcal VV be the class of real functions that are C2C^2C2 in Ω\OmegaΩ, C1C^1C1 on Ω‾\overline\OmegaΩ and vanish on ΓD\Gamma_DΓD, and for w∈Vw \in \mathcal Vw∈V let

q0(w)=∫ΓN∣w∣2 dΓ,q1(w)=∫Ω∣∇w∣2 dx,B(w)=s q0(w)+s2q0(w)2+4q1(w).q_0(w) = \int_{\Gamma_N} |w|^2\,d\Gamma, \qquad q_1(w) = \int_\Omega |\nabla w|^2\,dx, \qquad B(w) = s\,q_0(w) + \sqrt{s^2 q_0(w)^2 + 4q_1(w)} .q0(w)=∫ΓN∣w∣2dΓ,q1(w)=∫Ω∣∇w∣2dx,B(w)=sq0(w)+s2q0(w)2+4q1(w).

Suppose that φ∈V\varphi \in \mathcal Vφ∈V with ∫Ωφ2 dx=1\int_\Omega \varphi^2\,dx = 1∫Ωφ2dx=1 attains the minimum of BBB over {w∈V:∫Ωw2 dx=1}\{w \in \mathcal V : \int_\Omega w^2\,dx = 1\}{w∈V:∫Ωw2dx=1}, as in (5.16), and let b=B(φ)/2b = B(\varphi)/2b=B(φ)/2, as in (5.15). Then φ\varphiφ solves (5.7):

∫Ω∇φ⋅∇v dx−b2∫Ωφv dx+bμ22−μ12∫ΓNφv dΓ=0for every v∈V.\int_\Omega \nabla\varphi\cdot\nabla v\,dx - b^2\int_\Omega \varphi v\,dx + b\sqrt{\mu_2^2-\mu_1^2}\int_{\Gamma_N}\varphi v\,d\Gamma = 0 \qquad \text{for every } v \in \mathcal V.∫Ω∇φ⋅∇vdx−b2∫Ωφvdx+bμ22−μ12∫ΓNφvdΓ=0for every v∈V.

This is case (b) of §5.1: together with the choice of delays (5.5)–(5.6), (5.7) is the variational form of (5.2) at λ=ib\lambda = ibλ=ib, so the minimiser produces a solution eibtφe^{ibt}\varphieibtφ with constant standard energy for each delay τ=(arccos⁡(−μ1/μ2)+2lπ)/b\tau = (\arccos(-\mu_1/\mu_2) + 2l\pi)/bτ=(arccos(−μ1/μ2)+2lπ)/b.

Formalization Note The paper minimises over the unit sphere of HΓD1(Ω)H^1_{\Gamma_D}(\Omega)HΓD1(Ω) and tests (5.7) against all of HΓD1(Ω)H^1_{\Gamma_D}(\Omega)HΓD1(Ω); the statement uses the classical class V\mathcal VV in both places, since Sobolev spaces on domains are not available in Mathlib. As in the paper, the existence of the minimiser is a hypothesis ("if the minimum … is attained at φ\varphiφ"), not a conclusion. Functions are real, so the complex conjugates vˉ\bar vvˉ of the page disappear.

/-- Case (b), (5.15)–(5.19): let `0 < μ₁ < μ₂` and `s = √(μ₂² - μ₁²)`. If `φ` in the admissible
class, with `∫_Ω φ² = 1`, minimises `B_s(w) = s q₀(w) + √(s² q₀(w)² + 4 q₁(w))` over the
normalised admissible functions, then with `b = B_s(φ)/2` the function `φ` solves (5.7):
`∫_Ω ∇φ·∇v dx - b² ∫_Ω φ v dx + b s ∫_{Γ_N} φ v dΓ = 0` for every admissible `v`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
