Let C⊆{c:{0,1}n→{0,1}}C\subseteq\{c:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}\}C⊆{c:{0,1}n→{0,1}} be a non-trivial concept class (it has at least two concepts and is not of the form {c,1−c}\{c,1-c\}{c,1−c}) with VC-dim(C)=d+1\mathrm{VC\text{-}dim}(C)=d+1VC-dim(C)=d+1. A quantum (ε,δ)(\varepsilon,\delta)(ε,δ)-PAC learner using TTT examples is a POVM {Mh}\{M_h\}{Mh}, indexed by hypotheses h:{0,1}n→{0,1}h:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}h:{0,1}n→{0,1}, acting on TTT copies of the quantum example ∣ψc,D⟩=∑xD(x) ∣x,c(x)⟩|\psi_{c,D}\rangle=\sum_x\sqrt{D(x)}\,|x,c(x)\rangle∣ψc,D⟩=∑xD(x)∣x,c(x)⟩, such that for every c∈Cc\in Cc∈C and every distribution DDD on {0,1}n\{0,1\}^n{0,1}n it outputs an hhh with Pr⁡x∼D[h(x)≠c(x)]≤ε\Pr_{x\sim D}[h(x)\neq c(x)]\le\varepsilonPrx∼D[h(x)=c(x)]≤ε with probability at least 1−δ1-\delta1−δ.

For every δ0∈(0,1/2)\delta_0\in(0,1/2)δ0∈(0,1/2) there is a constant C0>0C_0>0C0>0 such that for all nnn, all such CCC, all δ∈(0,δ0]\delta\in(0,\delta_0]δ∈(0,δ0] and ε∈(0,1/4)\varepsilon\in(0,1/4)ε∈(0,1/4), every quantum (ε,δ)(\varepsilon,\delta)(ε,δ)-PAC learner for CCC using TTT examples satisfies

T ≥ C0(dεlog⁡(d/ε)+log⁡(1/δ)ε),T\ \ge\ C_0\left(\frac{d}{\varepsilon\log(d/\varepsilon)}+\frac{\log(1/\delta)}{\varepsilon}\right),T ≥ C0(εlog(d/ε)d+εlog(1/δ)),

with logarithms to base 2.

This is the information-theoretic quantum lower bound, tight up to the log⁡(d/ε)\log(d/\varepsilon)log(d/ε) factor; Section 7.5 later removes that factor.

Formalization Note The constant of the Ω\OmegaΩ is allowed to depend on an upper bound δ0<1/2\delta_0<1/2δ0<1/2 for δ\deltaδ, and non-triviality of CCC is assumed (it matters only at d=0d=0d=0); both are the hypotheses of Lemma 7.4.1, which the proof invokes for the log⁡(1/δ)/ε\log(1/\delta)/\varepsilonlog(1/δ)/ε term. At d=0d=0d=0 the first term evaluates to 000.

/-- Arunachalam p.168–169, Theorem 7.4.6: let `C` be a concept class with `VC-dim(C) = d + 1`.
Then for every `δ ∈ (0, 1/2)` and `ε ∈ (0, 1/4)`, every `(ε, δ)`-PAC quantum learner for `C` has
sample complexity `Ω(d/(ε log(d/ε)) + log(1/δ)/ε)`.

Recorded corrections (trap 30), as for Theorem 7.4.3: the constant of the `Ω` may depend on an
upper bound `δ₀ < 1/2` on `δ` (the `log(1/δ)/ε` part is Lemma 7.4.1, which cannot hold uniformly
as `δ → 1/2`), and `C` is non-trivial (the hypothesis of Lemma 7.4.1; binding only at `d = 0`). The
constant is uniform over `n`, `C`, `d`, `δ ∈ (0, δ₀]` and `ε`. -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Fix a real number δ0\delta_0δ0 with 0<δ0<120 < \delta_0 < \tfrac120<δ0<21. The theorem asserts that there is a constant C0>0C_0 > 0C0>0, depending only on δ0\delta_0δ0, such that the following holds for:

  • every n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N;
  • every concept class CCC, a finite set of Boolean functions c:{0,1}n→{0,1}c : \{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}c:{0,1}n→{0,1};
  • every d∈Nd \in \mathbb{N}d∈N;
  • all reals δ,ε\delta, \varepsilonδ,ε with 0<δ≤δ00 < \delta \le \delta_00<δ≤δ0 and 0<ε<140 < \varepsilon < \tfrac140<ε<41;
  • every T∈NT \in \mathbb{N}T∈N and every family M=(Mh)hM = (M_h)_hM=(Mh)h of complex square matrices indexed by all functions h:{0,1}n→{0,1}h : \{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}h:{0,1}n→{0,1} (not only those in CCC). Each MhM_hMh acts on the space with basis indexed by TTT-tuples ((x1,b1),…,(xT,bT))∈({0,1}n×{0,1})T\big((x_1,b_1),\dots,(x_T,b_T)\big) \in (\{0,1\}^n \times \{0,1\})^T((x1,b1),…,(xT,bT))∈({0,1}n×{0,1})T.

The hypotheses are:

  1. VC dimension. The VC dimension of CCC equals d+1d+1d+1. Here the VC dimension is that of the family of supports {x:c(x)=1}\{x : c(x) = 1\}{x:c(x)=1}, c∈Cc \in Cc∈C. So ddd is the VC dimension minus one, and d=0d = 0d=0 is allowed.
  2. Non-triviality. CCC is non-trivial: ∣C∣≥2|C| \ge 2∣C∣≥2, and CCC is not of the form {c,cˉ}\{c, \bar c\}{c,cˉ} for any function ccc, where cˉ(x)=1−c(x)\bar c(x) = 1 - c(x)cˉ(x)=1−c(x).
  3. MMM is a quantum (ε,δ)(\varepsilon,\delta)(ε,δ)-PAC learner for CCC using TTT examples. This means:
    • MMM is a POVM: each MhM_hMh is positive semidefinite and ∑hMh=I\sum_h M_h = I∑hMh=I.
    • For every c∈Cc \in Cc∈C and every probability distribution DDD on {0,1}n\{0,1\}^n{0,1}n (that is, D(x)≥0D(x) \ge 0D(x)≥0 and ∑xD(x)=1\sum_x D(x) = 1∑xD(x)=1), we have
∑h : errD(c,h)≤εRe⁡Tr⁡ ⁣(Mh ∣Ψ⟩⟨Ψ∣)  ≥  1−δ.\sum_{h \,:\, \mathrm{err}_D(c,h) \le \varepsilon} \operatorname{Re}\operatorname{Tr}\!\big(M_h\, |\Psi\rangle\langle\Psi|\big) \;\ge\; 1-\delta.h:errD(c,h)≤ε∑ReTr(Mh∣Ψ⟩⟨Ψ∣)≥1−δ.
  • Here errD(c,h)=∑x:h(x)≠c(x)D(x)\mathrm{err}_D(c,h) = \sum_{x : h(x) \ne c(x)} D(x)errD(c,h)=∑x:h(x)=c(x)D(x), and ∣Ψ⟩=∣ψc,D⟩⊗T|\Psi\rangle = |\psi_{c,D}\rangle^{\otimes T}∣Ψ⟩=∣ψc,D⟩⊗T. The coordinates of ∣Ψ⟩|\Psi\rangle∣Ψ⟩ are ∏i=1Tψc,D(xi,bi)\prod_{i=1}^T \psi_{c,D}(x_i,b_i)∏i=1Tψc,D(xi,bi), where ψc,D(x,b)=D(x)\psi_{c,D}(x,b) = \sqrt{D(x)}ψc,D(x,b)=D(x) if b=c(x)b = c(x)b=c(x) and 000 otherwise. For T=0T = 0T=0 this is the scalar 111 on a one-dimensional space.

The conclusion is

C0(dεlog⁡2(d/ε)+log⁡2(1/δ)ε)≤T.C_0\left(\frac{d}{\varepsilon \log_2(d/\varepsilon)} + \frac{\log_2(1/\delta)}{\varepsilon}\right) \le T.C0(εlog2(d/ε)d+εlog2(1/δ))≤T.

When d=0d = 0d=0 the first summand evaluates to 000 (it is 000 divided by a junk value). When d≥1d \ge 1d≥1, the condition ε<14\varepsilon < \tfrac14ε<41 gives d/ε>4d/\varepsilon > 4d/ε>4, so the logarithm is positive.
