Indexed-heap sorting: correctness and logarithmic running time

For an allocated key sequence and a nonnegative count mmm, a terminating sort_indices.Call returns a fresh valid sequence whose first mmm entries permute 0,…,m−10,\ldots,m-10,…,m−1 and are ordered by their original keys. Negative or duplicate integer keys and m=0m=0m=0 are allowed; stability among equal keys is not asserted. The sorting postcondition does not constrain indices outside this prefix.

Every previously allocated caller sequence and object, and all collections, are preserved. Budget m (2m) bounds each clock increment by 2m2m2m times its rate: 1 for sort_steps, 2⌊log⁡2(m+1)⌋2\lfloor\log_2(m+1)\rfloor2⌊log2(m+1)⌋ for heap_comparisons, and ⌊log⁡2(m+1)⌋+1\lfloor\log_2(m+1)\rfloor+1⌊log2(m+1)⌋+1 for heap_swaps. Consequently their sum is at most

2m(3⌊log⁡2(m+1)⌋+2).2m\bigl(3\lfloor\log_2(m+1)\rfloor+2\bigr).2m(3⌊log2(m+1)⌋+2).

Clients reuse this call contract to obtain ordered identifiers, preservation and costs together. The implementation repeatedly inserts and extracts from an indexed min-priority queue; it is not the exact in-place HEAPSORT program of CLRS §6.4. Its heap structure and operations correspond to fourth-edition Chapter 6, especially §6.5.

Costs count the named source ticks over mathematical integers and total integer-indexed sequences. They are not wall-clock time, bit complexity, or a count of every arithmetic operation, access, allocation, or compiler transition. Counters may start at arbitrary values; bounds refer to the increments during this call.

<!-- algo2lean-provenance-v0.1.4 -->

Algo2Lean provenance and reproduction. These definitions target Algo2Lean v0.1.4, using the compiler source at public commit 0f79d5e4242e6477531c9ee4410409f5b1c92f76, and Lean 4.33.1. The versioned compiler location is Algo2Lean v0.1.4. Compile all supplied .algo files and imports to reproduce the raw generated definitions. Release publication and exact website parity require their separately recorded checks; this metadata alone does not assert them. Prove2Me imports and declaration packaging are mechanically adapted, with original hashes, compiler-reported source ranges, and adaptations recorded in transplant provenance. Exact reproduction does not prove the compiler correct.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
