Let Gα:Z→RG_\alpha : \mathbb Z \to \mathbb RGα:Z→R be convex on the integers with Gα(y)→∞G_\alpha(y) \to \inftyGα(y)→∞ as ∣y∣→∞|y| \to \infty∣y∣→∞, let K≥0K \ge 0K≥0 and 0≤α≤10 \le \alpha \le 10≤α≤1, and let S‾\underline{S}S be the smallest minimizer of GαG_\alphaGα. Then:

  1. Sˉ\bar{S}Sˉ is the least integer yyy with y≥S‾y \ge \underline{S}y≥S and Gα(y+1)≥Gα(S‾)+αKG_\alpha(y+1) \ge G_\alpha(\underline{S}) + \alpha KGα(y+1)≥Gα(S)+αK;
  2. s‾\underline{s}s is the least integer yyy with Gα(y)≤Gα(S‾)+KG_\alpha(y) \le G_\alpha(\underline{S}) + KGα(y)≤Gα(S)+K;
  3. sˉ\bar{s}sˉ is the least integer yyy with Gα(y)≤Gα(S‾)+(1−α)KG_\alpha(y) \le G_\alpha(\underline{S}) + (1-\alpha) KGα(y)≤Gα(S)+(1−α)K.

In particular each of the three sets is nonempty and has a least element, as the paper asserts ("The existence of the above parameters is ensured by the fact that lim⁡∣y∣→∞Gα(y)=∞\lim_{|y|\to\infty} G_\alpha(y) = \inftylim∣y∣→∞Gα(y)=∞").

This guarantees that the bounds Sˉ\bar SSˉ, s‾\underline ss, sˉ\bar ssˉ used in Theorem 4 are well defined.

Formalization Note "Least element" is Mathlib's IsLeast: membership in the set plus being a lower bound of it. SHigh G K α, sLow G K and sHigh G K α are defined as infima of these sets.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
