Let m≥1m\ge1m≥1 be an integer, let α,β∈C∖R\alpha,\beta\in\mathbb C\setminus\mathbb Rα,β∈C∖R (no condition on their moduli), and let c∈Cc\in\mathbb Cc∈C with c≠0c\ne0c=0. For γ∈C\gamma\in\mathbb Cγ∈C put Pγ(X,Y)=Xm(γ+XY)+Ym(γˉ+XY)P_\gamma(X,Y)=X^m(\gamma+XY)+Y^m(\bar\gamma+XY)Pγ(X,Y)=Xm(γ+XY)+Ym(γˉ+XY), as in equation (6), and Cm,γ={z∈C:Re⁡(zm(∣z∣2+γ))=0}C_{m,\gamma}=\{z\in\mathbb C:\operatorname{Re}(z^m(|z|^2+\gamma))=0\}Cm,γ={z∈C:Re(zm(∣z∣2+γ))=0}, so that Pγ(z,zˉ)=2Re⁡(zm(∣z∣2+γ))P_\gamma(z,\bar z)=2\operatorname{Re}(z^m(|z|^2+\gamma))Pγ(z,zˉ)=2Re(zm(∣z∣2+γ)). Let C^m,γ\widehat C_{m,\gamma}Cm,γ be the closure of Cm,γC_{m,\gamma}Cm,γ in the Riemann sphere C^=C∪{∞}\widehat{\mathbb C}=\mathbb C\cup\{\infty\}C=C∪{∞}, and let Jc ⁣:C^→C^J_c\colon\widehat{\mathbb C}\to\widehat{\mathbb C}Jc:C→C be the inversion Jc(z)=c/zJ_c(z)=c/zJc(z)=c/z for z∈C∖{0}z\in\mathbb C\setminus\{0\}z∈C∖{0}, Jc(0)=∞J_c(0)=\inftyJc(0)=∞, Jc(∞)=0J_c(\infty)=0Jc(∞)=0.

Assume that Jc(C^m,α)⊆C^m,βJ_c(\widehat C_{m,\alpha})\subseteq\widehat C_{m,\beta}Jc(Cm,α)⊆Cm,β. Then there is k∈Ck\in\mathbb Ck∈C with k≠0k\ne0k=0 such that, as polynomials in C[X,Y]\mathbb C[X,Y]C[X,Y],

∣c∣2 cˉ mXm+∣c∣2 cmYm+XY(cˉ mβˉ Xm+cmβ Ym)=k Pα(X,Y).|c|^2\,\bar c^{\,m}X^m+|c|^2\,c^mY^m+XY\bigl(\bar c^{\,m}\bar\beta\,X^m+c^m\beta\,Y^m\bigr)=k\,P_\alpha(X,Y).∣c∣2cˉmXm+∣c∣2cmYm+XY(cˉmβˉXm+cmβYm)=kPα(X,Y).

The left side equals Xm+1Ym+1Pβ(c/X,cˉ/Y)X^{m+1}Y^{m+1}P_\beta(c/X,\bar c/Y)Xm+1Ym+1Pβ(c/X,cˉ/Y): it is the pullback of PβP_\betaPβ by z↦c/zz\mapsto c/zz↦c/z (with XXX, YYY standing for zzz, zˉ\bar zzˉ), with the denominator cleared.

In Theorem 2 an ambient equivalence between the curves is reduced to the forms czczcz, c/zc/zc/z, czˉc\bar zczˉ, c/zˉc/\bar zc/zˉ. This result treats the inversion case: the cleared pullback of PβP_\betaPβ is proportional to PαP_\alphaPα, which yields the ratio in (8) and the condition c2m=αˉ2c^{2m}=\bar\alpha^{2}c2m=αˉ2 in (3). The hypothesis is an inclusion on the whole sphere, including the point 000, which JcJ_cJc sends to ∞\infty∞. Through Theorem 2 it is also used for Theorem 1 and Remark 5.

Formalization Note: the Riemann sphere is the one-point compactification OnePoint ℂ, C^m,γ\widehat C_{m,\gamma}Cm,γ is the topological closure in it, and JcJ_cJc is defined pointwise on the sphere with the values above at 000 and ∞\infty∞.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
