Cubical Sperner: labelled grids, grid simplices and their faces

Definition

by scanstone · Oct 14, 2026 · Mathlib 0df444a (Lean v4.33.1)

A Sperner cube is the grid {0,…,p}n\{0,\dots,p\}^n{0,…,p}n with a labelling LLL by numbers 0,…,n0,\dots,n0,…,n such that a point whose kkk-th coordinate is 000 never carries label kkk, and a point whose kkk-th coordinate is ppp carries a label at most kkk. A grid mmm-simplex is an injective list I0,…,ImI_0,\dots,I_mI0,…,Im of grid points that increase weakly in every coordinate, with ImI_mIm exceeding I0I_0I0 by at most one in every coordinate. An (n−1)(n-1)(n−1)-simplex III is a face of an nnn-simplex JJJ when every vertex of III is a vertex of JJJ; deleting vertex jjj of JJJ gives such a face.

These are the objects of Kuhn's cubical Sperner lemma, from which Brouwer's fixed-point theorem for the cube follows.

H. W. Kuhn, *Some combinatorial lemmas in topology*, IBM J. Res. Dev. 4 (1960), 518–524.

A *Sperner cube* is the grid `{0,…,p}ⁿ` (points `Fin n → Fin (p+1)`) with a labelling
`RL` by natural numbers `0,…,n` such that a point with `k`-th coordinate `0` never carries
label `k`, and a point with `k`-th coordinate `p` carries a label `≤ k`.
A *grid `m`-simplex* is an injective list `I 0, …, I m` of grid points, increasing in every
coordinate, whose last point exceeds the first by at most one in every coordinate.
`is_face I J` says that the `n1`-simplex `I` is a facet (has all its vertices among those)
of the full-dimensional simplex `J`; `delete_vertex j J` removes vertex `j` from `J`, and
`insert_index j` is the order embedding `Fin (n1+1) → Fin (n+1)` that skips `j`.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
