Third terms of a fully open path: ν₂(t_j − t_i) is the minimal level between them
ProvedErdos195.open_path_third_term_valuationA tree witness defines a strict total order on (milestone framework). A finite word of integers is -safe if the sequence "letters of in order, then all remaining integers in -order" has no monotone 4-term arithmetic progression; positions are first occurrences. For an in-order pair of a word ( before ), call its third term, its fourth term, and its level. An open path in is a family of in-order pairs , , of letters of with for and no third term in . Write , , and for the fourth term of the last (sink) pair.
Theorem. Suppose is -safe for some tree witness and contains an open path of length whose sink fourth term is also absent from . Then for all there is with and such that
and for every likewise (the minimum attained at some ).
Along a fully open path the 2-adic distance between third terms (and from a third term to the sink's fourth term) is exactly the lowest level of the pairs in between. This sharpens the ruler law (milestone #148): , and the ruler law makes the minimal valuation in every window unique.
