Let (Ω,F,P)(\Omega,\mathcal F,P)(Ω,F,P) be a probability space carrying a measurable process Y=(Yi)i≥0Y=(Y_i)_{i\ge0}Y=(Yi)i≥0, and let α(n)\alpha(n)α(n) be its strong mixing coefficient at lag nnn,

α(n)=sup⁡ksup⁡{∣P(A∩B)−P(A)P(B)∣:A∈σ(Y0,…,Yk), B∈σ(Yk+n,Yk+n+1,… )}.\alpha(n)=\sup_k\sup\bigl\{|P(A\cap B)-P(A)P(B)|:A\in\sigma(Y_0,\dots,Y_k),\ B\in\sigma(Y_{k+n},Y_{k+n+1},\dots)\bigr\}.α(n)=ksupsup{∣P(A∩B)−P(A)P(B)∣:A∈σ(Y0,…,Yk), B∈σ(Yk+n,Yk+n+1,…)}.

Let UUU be a bounded complex random variable measurable with respect to the past σ(Y0,…,Yk)\sigma(Y_0,\dots,Y_k)σ(Y0,…,Yk), and VVV a bounded complex random variable measurable with respect to the future σ(Yk+n,… )\sigma(Y_{k+n},\dots)σ(Yk+n,…), with ∥U∥∞≤A\|U\|_\infty\le A∥U∥∞≤A and ∥V∥∞≤B\|V\|_\infty\le B∥V∥∞≤B. Then

∣E[UV]−E[U] E[V]∣  ≤  16 A B α(n).\bigl|E[UV]-E[U]\,E[V]\bigr|\;\le\;16\,A\,B\,\alpha(n).E[UV]−E[U]E[V]≤16ABα(n).

This is the complex-valued form of the classical covariance inequality for bounded random variables under strong mixing. It is the estimate on which every characteristic-function proof of a central limit theorem for mixing sequences rests: applied to U=exp⁡(it S′)U=\exp(it\,S')U=exp(itS′) and V=exp⁡(it S′′)V=\exp(it\,S'')V=exp(itS′′) with S′S'S′ and S′′S''S′′ sums over blocks of indices separated by a gap of length nnn, it says that the characteristic function of a sum of well-separated blocks factorizes up to an error 16α(n)16\alpha(n)16α(n) per junction, which is what makes the Bernstein big-block/small-block scheme work.

The constant 161616 is 444 times the constant 444 of the real-valued inequality ∣cov⁡(U,V)∣≤4∥U∥∞∥V∥∞α(n)|\operatorname{cov}(U,V)|\le 4\|U\|_\infty\|V\|_\infty\alpha(n)∣cov(U,V)∣≤4∥U∥∞∥V∥∞α(n): splitting UUU and VVV into real and imaginary parts produces four real covariances, and the real and imaginary parts of the complex covariance are each a sum of two of them.

Formalization Note Boundedness is stated pointwise rather than almost everywhere, and the two bounds AAA and BBB are separate, so that the inequality can be applied directly to normalized variables. Measurability with respect to the past and the future is stated with respect to the σ-algebras processSigma Y (Set.Iic k) and processSigma Y (Set.Ici (k + n)) used to define the mixing coefficient itself.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
