In a robust discounted MDP with discount factor 0<ν<10<\nu<10<ν<1 (finite states, finite nonempty action set, costs c≥0c\ge0c≥0, nonempty rectangular row sets in the simplex): for every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0 there is NεN_\varepsilonNε such that for every N>NεN>N_\varepsilonN>Nε

ϕ∞(Πs,Ts)−ε≤ϕN(Π,T)≤ϕ∞(Πs,Ts).\phi_\infty(\Pi_s,\mathcal T_s)-\varepsilon\le\phi_N(\Pi,\mathcal T)\le\phi_\infty(\Pi_s,\mathcal T_s).ϕ∞(Πs,Ts)−ε≤ϕN(Π,T)≤ϕ∞(Πs,Ts).

In particular the finite-horizon robust value under time-varying uncertainty, ϕN(Π,T)\phi_N(\Pi,\mathcal T)ϕN(Π,T), converges to the value of the stationary infinite-horizon game (6).

This is Step (a) of the proof of Theorem 4; combined with Eq. (35) it yields ϕ∞(Π,T)=ϕ∞(Πs,Ts)\phi_\infty(\Pi,\mathcal T)=\phi_\infty(\Pi_s,\mathcal T_s)ϕ∞(Π,T)=ϕ∞(Πs,Ts).

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N with states {0,…,n−1}\{0,\dots,n-1\}{0,…,n−1}, and let AAA be a finite, nonempty action set. The model gives:

  • costs c(i,a)≥0c(i,a)\ge0c(i,a)≥0;
  • nonempty sets Pia\mathcal P_i^aPia of probability vectors on the states. No convexity or closedness is assumed.

Let 0<ν<10<\nu<10<ν<1 and let i0i_0i0 be an initial state.

  • A controller policy π=(πt)t∈N\pi=(\pi_t)_{t\in\mathbb N}π=(πt)t∈N is a sequence of maps from states to actions.
  • A nature policy τ=(Pt)t∈N\tau=(P_t)_{t\in\mathbb N}τ=(Pt)t∈N is a sequence of matrix families (Pta)a∈A(P_t^a)_{a\in A}(Pta)a∈A with rows Pta(i,⋅)∈PiaP_t^a(i,\cdot)\in\mathcal P_i^aPta(i,⋅)∈Pia.

The state distribution is μ0=ei0\mu_0=e_{i_0}μ0=ei0, μt+1(j)=∑iμt(i)Ptπt(i)(i,j)\mu_{t+1}(j)=\sum_i\mu_t(i)P_t^{\pi_t(i)}(i,j)μt+1(j)=∑iμt(i)Ptπt(i)(i,j). The costs are

CN(π,τ)=∑t=0N−1νt∑iμt(i)c(i,πt(i)),C_N(\pi,\tau)=\sum_{t=0}^{N-1}\nu^t\sum_i\mu_t(i)c(i,\pi_t(i)),CN(π,τ)=t=0∑N−1νti∑μt(i)c(i,πt(i)),

and C∞C_\inftyC∞ is the infinite sum, which is summable here.

The two values compared are

φN(Π,T)=inf⁡πsup⁡τCN(π,τ),\varphi_N(\Pi,\mathcal T)=\inf_{\pi}\sup_{\tau}C_N(\pi,\tau),φN(Π,T)=πinfτsupCN(π,τ),

over all controller and nature policies, and

φ∞(Πs,Ts)=inf⁡σsup⁡PC∞((σ,σ,… ),(P,P,… )),\varphi_\infty(\Pi_s,\mathcal T_s)=\inf_{\sigma}\sup_{P}C_\infty\big((\sigma,\sigma,\dots),(P,P,\dots)\big),φ∞(Πs,Ts)=σinfPsupC∞((σ,σ,…),(P,P,…)),

over single maps σ\sigmaσ from states to actions and single choices of nature PPP, each used at every time.

Claim. For every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0 there is Nε∈NN_\varepsilon\in\mathbb NNε∈N such that every N>NεN>N_\varepsilonN>Nε satisfies

φ∞(Πs,Ts)−ε  ≤  φN(Π,T)  ≤  φ∞(Πs,Ts).\varphi_\infty(\Pi_s,\mathcal T_s)-\varepsilon\;\le\;\varphi_N(\Pi,\mathcal T)\;\le\;\varphi_\infty(\Pi_s,\mathcal T_s).φ∞(Πs,Ts)−ε≤φN(Π,T)≤φ∞(Πs,Ts).

Both inequalities are asserted only for N>NεN>N_\varepsilonN>Nε, not for every NNN. In particular, φN(Π,T)→φ∞(Πs,Ts)\varphi_N(\Pi,\mathcal T)\to\varphi_\infty(\Pi_s,\mathcal T_s)φN(Π,T)→φ∞(Πs,Ts) as N→∞N\to\inftyN→∞.

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n=0n=0: no initial state exists, so the statement is vacuous.
  • Real conventions: all quantities are finite and nonnegative, and all index sets are nonempty, so the conventions for empty or unbounded real suprema and infima do not arise.
  • N=0N=0N=0: here φ0(Π,T)=0\varphi_0(\Pi,\mathcal T)=0φ0(Π,T)=0, but N=0N=0N=0 is never required to satisfy the claim, since N>Nε≥0N>N_\varepsilon\ge0N>Nε≥0.
