Let m≥1m\ge 1m≥1 be an integer and α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ (that is, α\alphaα is not real), and let hα(t)=−t (tm+1) (αtm+αˉ)∈C[t]h_\alpha(t)=-t\,(t^m+1)\,(\alpha t^m+\bar\alpha)\in\mathbb C[t]hα(t)=−t(tm+1)(αtm+αˉ)∈C[t]. Let Lα=C(t)[W]/(W2−hα(t))L_\alpha=\mathbb C(t)[W]/(W^2-h_\alpha(t))Lα=C(t)[W]/(W2−hα(t)), with www the class of WWW. In the coordinate s=1/ts=1/ts=1/t the double cover becomes the one with parameter αˉ\bar\alphaαˉ: let Lαˉ=C(s)[W′]/(W′2−hαˉ(s))L_{\bar\alpha}=\mathbb C(s)[W']/(W'^2-h_{\bar\alpha}(s))Lαˉ=C(s)[W′]/(W′2−hαˉ(s)), with w′w'w′ the class of W′W'W′, and let ψ ⁣:Lα→Lαˉ\psi\colon L_\alpha\to L_{\bar\alpha}ψ:Lα→Lαˉ be the ring homomorphism with ψ(r(t))=r(1/s)\psi(r(t))=r(1/s)ψ(r(t))=r(1/s) for r∈C(t)r\in\mathbb C(t)r∈C(t) and ψ(w)=w′/sm+1\psi(w)=w'/s^{m+1}ψ(w)=w′/sm+1. Let O0,0′⊆Lαˉ\mathcal O'_{0,0}\subseteq L_{\bar\alpha}O0,0′⊆Lαˉ be the local ring of the point (s,w′)=(0,0)(s,w')=(0,0)(s,w′)=(0,0) of w′2=hαˉ(s)w'^2=h_{\bar\alpha}(s)w′2=hαˉ(s), that is, the localization of C[s][W′]/(W′2−hαˉ(s))\mathbb C[s][W']/(W'^2-h_{\bar\alpha}(s))C[s][W′]/(W′2−hαˉ(s)) at the kernel of the evaluation s↦0s\mapsto0s↦0, W′↦0W'\mapsto0W′↦0. The place at infinity of LαL_\alphaLα is O∞=ψ−1(O0,0′)\mathcal O_\infty=\psi^{-1}(\mathcal O'_{0,0})O∞=ψ−1(O0,0′). Finally, for c,d∈Cc,d\in\mathbb Cc,d∈C with d2=hα(c)d^2=h_\alpha(c)d2=hα(c), let Oc,d⊆Lα\mathcal O_{c,d}\subseteq L_\alphaOc,d⊆Lα be the local ring of the point (c,d)(c,d)(c,d) of w2=hα(t)w^2=h_\alpha(t)w2=hα(t), the localization of C[t][W]/(W2−hα(t))\mathbb C[t][W]/(W^2-h_\alpha(t))C[t][W]/(W2−hα(t)) at the kernel of the evaluation t↦ct\mapsto ct↦c, W↦dW\mapsto dW↦d. Then:

  1. O∞≠Lα\mathcal O_\infty\ne L_\alphaO∞=Lα, O∞\mathcal O_\inftyO∞ contains C\mathbb CC, and t∉O∞t\notin\mathcal O_\inftyt∈/O∞;
  2. every valuation subring O\mathcal OO of LαL_\alphaLα with O≠Lα\mathcal O\ne L_\alphaO=Lα that contains C\mathbb CC is either Oc,d\mathcal O_{c,d}Oc,d for some c,d∈Cc,d\in\mathbb Cc,d∈C with d2=hα(c)d^2=h_\alpha(c)d2=hα(c), or O∞\mathcal O_\inftyO∞.

Thus every place of LαL_\alphaLα containing the constants lies in the list

{Oc,d: c,d∈C, d2=hα(c)} ∪ {O∞}.\{\mathcal O_{c,d}:\ c,d\in\mathbb C,\ d^2=h_\alpha(c)\}\ \cup\ \{\mathcal O_\infty\}.{Oc,d: c,d∈C, d2=hα(c)} ∪ {O∞}.

This is the complete list of places of the function field of VαV_\alphaVα, in the form of the double cover (7) from the proof of Lemma 4: the points of the affine curve w2=hα(t)w^2=h_\alpha(t)w2=hα(t) and one place over t=∞t=\inftyt=∞. The genus in Lemma 4 is defined through differentials that are regular at every place, so this list is what that computation ranges over; it also serves Remark 5.

Formalization Note: m>0m>0m>0 and α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ are Fact instances; a place is a valuation subring different from the whole field.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
