Let f1,…,fNf_1,\dots,f_Nf1,…,fN be C2C^2C2 functions on Rn\mathbb R^nRn, let 0<λ0<\lambda0<λ, 0<Λ0<\Lambda0<Λ, and suppose that λI≺∇2FSH(w)≺ΛI\lambda I\prec\nabla^2F_{\mathcal S_H}(w)\prec\Lambda IλI≺∇2FSH(w)≺ΛI for all www and all samples SH\mathcal S_HSH of size bHb_HbH, where 1≤bH≤N1\le b_H\le N1≤bH≤N (Assumption 1). Fix positive integers MMM and LLL. Then there are constants 0<μ1≤μ20<\mu_1\le\mu_20<μ1≤μ2 such that, for every run of Algorithm 1 (any step lengths, initial point and samples, with Hessian samples of size bHb_HbH) and every t≥1t\ge1t≥1 for which the correction vectors s1,…,sts_1,\dots,s_ts1,…,st are nonzero, the Hessian approximation HtH_tHt of Algorithm 2 satisfies

μ1I≺Ht≺μ2I.\mu_1I\prec H_t\prec\mu_2I .μ1I≺Ht≺μ2I.

The constants are fixed before the run: they do not depend on the step lengths, the initial point, the samples or ttt.

Formalization Note The paper's Algorithm 2 is undefined when some sj=0s_j=0sj=0 (it divides by yjTsjy_j^Ts_jyjTsj); the hypothesis sj≠0s_j\neq0sj=0 for 1≤j≤t1\le j\le t1≤j≤t is added. The paper's "for all SH⊆{1,…,N}\mathcal S_H\subseteq\{1,\dots,N\}SH⊆{1,…,N}" in (3.3) is read as all samples of the size bH≥1b_H\ge1bH≥1 that Algorithm 1 draws, which excludes the empty sample (for which (2.3) is 0/00/00/0). ≺\prec≺ is Matrix.PosDef of the difference.

/-- Lemma 3.1: under Assumption 1 (the losses are `C²` and every subsampled Hessian with `b_H`
samples satisfies `λ I ≺ ∇²F_{S_H}(w) ≺ Λ I`), there are constants `0 < μ₁ ≤ μ₂`, fixed before
the run, such that along every run of Algorithm 1 whose correction vectors `s_1, …, s_t` are
nonzero, the Hessian approximation of Algorithm 2 satisfies `μ₁ I ≺ H_t ≺ μ₂ I` (3.6). -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
