Let A=UΛUTA = U\Lambda U^TA=UΛUT be an n×nn \times nn×n real matrix given with an eigendecomposition: UUU orthogonal (UTU=IU^TU = IUTU=I) and Λ=diag(λ1,…,λn)\Lambda = \mathrm{diag}(\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_n)Λ=diag(λ1,…,λn) with every λj≥0\lambda_j \ge 0λj≥0. Fix M≥1M \ge 1M≥1, ϵ>0\epsilon > 0ϵ>0 and vectors z1,…,zM∈Rnz_1, \ldots, z_M \in \mathbb{R}^nz1,…,zM∈Rn; put yi=UTziy_i = U^T z_iyi=UTzi and let yijy_{ij}yij be its jjj-th entry. If

∣1M∑i=1Myij2−1∣≤ϵfor every j with λj≠0,\left|\frac{1}{M}\sum_{i=1}^{M} y_{ij}^2 - 1\right| \le \epsilon \quad \text{for every } j \text{ with } \lambda_j \ne 0,M1i=1∑Myij2−1≤ϵfor every j with λj=0,

then Hutchinson's estimator HM=1M∑i=1MziTAziH_M = \frac1M\sum_{i=1}^M z_i^TAz_iHM=M1∑i=1MziTAzi satisfies

∣HM−trace(A)∣≤ϵ trace(A).|H_M - \mathrm{trace}(A)| \le \epsilon\,\mathrm{trace}(A).∣HM−trace(A)∣≤ϵtrace(A).

This is the deterministic half of the proof of Theorem 7.1: it turns a bound on each eigen-direction into a relative error bound on the trace estimate. No probability is involved.

Formalization Note The page writes Λ=UAUT\Lambda = UAU^TΛ=UAUT together with yi=UTziy_i = U^Tz_iyi=UTzi; these fit together only for A=UΛUTA = U\Lambda U^TA=UΛUT, which is the convention stated here. The eigenvalues are indexed by all jjj and the hypothesis is required only for λj≠0\lambda_j \ne 0λj=0, which is the page's range j=1,…,rank(A)j = 1, \ldots, \mathrm{rank}(A)j=1,…,rank(A) after its reordering. Nonnegativity of the λj\lambda_jλj (positive semi-definiteness) is a hypothesis, as in the page's "A is symmetric and semidefinite".

/-- Proof of Theorem 7.1 (Avron–Toledo, p. 8:11, last display), a deterministic step.
Let `A = U Λ Uᵀ` with `U` orthogonal and `Λ = diag(λ_1, …, λ_n)`, `λ_j ≥ 0` (the
eigendecomposition of a symmetric positive semi-definite `A`). Fix `M ≥ 1`, `ε > 0` and
vectors `z_1, …, z_M ∈ ℝⁿ`, and put `y_i = Uᵀ z_i` with entries `y_ij`. If
`|(1/M) ∑_{i=1}^M y_ij² - 1| ≤ ε` for every `j` with `λ_j ≠ 0`, then
`|H_M - trace(A)| ≤ ε · trace(A)`, where `H_M = (1/M) ∑_i z_iᵀ A z_i`.
The page writes `Λ = U A Uᵀ` and `y_i = Uᵀ z_i`; these are consistent only for
`A = U Λ Uᵀ`, the convention used here. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
