Assume the standing assumptions of §3.4: ggg is twice continuously differentiable and strongly convex with constant m>0m>0m>0, ∇g\nabla g∇g is L1L_1L1-Lipschitz and ∇2g\nabla^2 g∇2g is L2L_2L2-Lipschitz; hhh is proper, closed and convex with domain DDD; x⋆x^\starx⋆ is the optimal solution of min⁡xf(x)=g(x)+h(x)\min_x f(x) = g(x)+h(x)minxf(x)=g(x)+h(x); and M>0M > 0M>0 satisfies ∇2g(x)⪯MI\nabla^2 g(x)\preceq MI∇2g(x)⪯MI for all xxx. Consider the inexact proximal Newton method with unit step lengths: x0∈Dx_0\in Dx0∈D, and xk+1=xk+Δxk∈Dx_{k+1} = x_k + \Delta x_k \in Dxk+1=xk+Δxk∈D, where Δxk\Delta x_kΔxk satisfies the adaptive stopping condition

∥Gf^k/M(xk+Δxk)∥≤ηk ∥Gf/M(xk)∥.(2.24)\|G_{\hat f_k/M}(x_k+\Delta x_k)\| \le \eta_k\,\|G_{f/M}(x_k)\|. \qquad (2.24)∥Gf^k/M(xk+Δxk)∥≤ηk∥Gf/M(xk)∥.(2.24)

Then:

  1. q-linear convergence. There exist ηˉ∈(0,m/2)\bar\eta\in(0, m/2)ηˉ∈(0,m/2), δ>0\delta>0δ>0 and r∈[0,1)r\in[0,1)r∈[0,1) such that for every forcing sequence with 0≤ηk≤ηˉ0\le\eta_k\le\bar\eta0≤ηk≤ηˉ for all kkk and every run with ∥x0−x⋆∥<δ\|x_0-x^\star\|<\delta∥x0−x⋆∥<δ,
∥xk+1−x⋆∥≤r ∥xk−x⋆∥for all k≥0.\|x_{k+1}-x^\star\| \le r\,\|x_k - x^\star\|\quad\text{for all } k\ge0 .∥xk+1−x⋆∥≤r∥xk−x⋆∥for all k≥0.
  1. q-superlinear convergence. For every forcing sequence with ηk≥0\eta_k\ge0ηk≥0 and ηk→0\eta_k\to0ηk→0 there is δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 such that every run with ∥x0−x⋆∥<δ\|x_0-x^\star\|<\delta∥x0−x⋆∥<δ satisfies xk→x⋆x_k\to x^\starxk→x⋆ and, for every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0, ∥xk+1−x⋆∥≤ε∥xk−x⋆∥\|x_{k+1}-x^\star\|\le\varepsilon\|x_k-x^\star\|∥xk+1−x⋆∥≤ε∥xk−x⋆∥ for all sufficiently large kkk.

The result shows that solving the proximal Newton subproblems only to the relative accuracy (2.24) preserves fast local convergence, the composite analogue of the Dembo–Eisenstat–Steihaug theory of inexact Newton methods.

Formalization Note "x0x_0x0 sufficiently close to x⋆x^\starx⋆" is an existential radius δ\deltaδ fixed before the run; in part 2 it may depend on the forcing sequence (fixed in advance, independent of the iterates) but not on the run. Part 1 is stated with an existential threshold ηˉ\bar\etaηˉ, as the page's "smaller than some ηˉ<m/2\bar\eta < m/2ηˉ<m/2" says; the reading "for every ηˉ<m/2\bar\eta < m/2ηˉ<m/2" is false: for n=1n=1n=1, g(x)=2x2g(x)=2x^2g(x)=2x2, h=0h=0h=0 one has m=L1=M=4m=L_1=M=4m=L1=M=4, L2=0L_2 = 0L2=0, Gf/M(y)=Gf^k/M(y)=yG_{f/M}(y) = G_{\hat f_k/M}(y) = yGf/M(y)=Gf^k/M(y)=y, and with ηk≡3/2<m/2\eta_k\equiv 3/2 < m/2ηk≡3/2<m/2 the steps xk+1=32xkx_{k+1} = \frac32 x_kxk+1=23xk satisfy (2.24) and diverge. The constant MMM of (2.24) is any M>0M > 0M>0 with ∇2g⪯MI\nabla^2 g \preceq MI∇2g⪯MI (the proof takes M=L1M = L_1M=L1). Rates are stated without quotients.

/-- Theorem 3.10: local q-linear and q-superlinear convergence of the inexact proximal Newton
method with unit step lengths under the adaptive stopping condition (2.24).
1. There is a threshold `η̄ ∈ (0, m/2)`, a radius `δ > 0` and a ratio `r ∈ [0, 1)` such that
every run whose forcing terms satisfy `0 ≤ η_k ≤ η̄` and whose start satisfies
   `‖x_0 - x⋆‖ < δ` obeys `‖x_{k+1} - x⋆‖ ≤ r ‖x_k - x⋆‖` for all `k`.
2. For every nonnegative forcing sequence `η_k → 0` there is a radius `δ > 0` such that every run
   with `‖x_0 - x⋆‖ < δ` converges to `x⋆` q-superlinearly. -/
