In Karlin's deterministic model (Ω\OmegaΩ Hausdorff, DDD nonempty compact Hausdorff, L≥0L \ge 0L≥0 continuous on Ω×D\Omega \times DΩ×D, (δ,ω)↦Tδ ω(\delta, \omega) \mapsto T_\delta\,\omega(δ,ω)↦Tδω continuous, P>0P > 0P>0 continuous, Pn(s)=∏i=1n−1P(δi)P_n(s) = \prod_{i=1}^{n-1} P(\delta_i)Pn(s)=∏i=1n−1P(δi)), suppose that for every initial state ω\omegaω the partial sums (1) of Φ(ω,s)=∑nL(ωn,δn)Pn(s)\Phi(\omega, s) = \sum_n L(\omega_n, \delta_n) P_n(s)Φ(ω,s)=∑nL(ωn,δn)Pn(s) converge uniformly in sss. Let K(ω)=max⁡SΦ(ω,s)K(\omega) = \max_{S} \Phi(\omega, s)K(ω)=maxSΦ(ω,s) be the optimal return. Then for every ω∈Ω\omega \in \Omegaω∈Ω

K(ω)=max⁡δ1∈D{L(ω,δ1)+P(δ1) K(Tδ1 ω)},(2)K(\omega) = \max_{\delta_1 \in D} \bigl\{ L(\omega, \delta_1) + P(\delta_1)\, K(T_{\delta_1}\,\omega) \bigr\}, \qquad (2)K(ω)=δ1∈Dmax{L(ω,δ1)+P(δ1)K(Tδ1ω)},(2)

and the maximum over δ1\delta_1δ1 is attained.

This is the "Principle of Optimality": the optimal return from ω\omegaω is obtained by choosing the best first decision and continuing optimally from the resulting state. It is the general form of the functional equation used throughout dynamic programming.

Formalization Note K(ω)K(\omega)K(ω) is written as the supremum of Φ(ω,⋅)\Phi(\omega, \cdot)Φ(ω,⋅) over all strategies s : ℕ → D; under the hypotheses, Φ(ω,⋅)\Phi(\omega,\cdot)Φ(ω,⋅) is continuous on the compact strategy space, so this supremum is a maximum. The conclusion is IsGreatest: K(ω)K(\omega)K(ω) belongs to the set of values L(ω,δ)+P(δ)K(Tδ ω)L(\omega, \delta) + P(\delta) K(T_\delta\,\omega)L(ω,δ)+P(δ)K(Tδω), δ∈D\delta \in Dδ∈D, and bounds it from above. Joint continuity of TTT and nonemptiness of DDD are assumed as in Theorem 1.

/-- The functional equation (2), "the Principle of Optimality" (Karlin 1955, p. 290): if the
series (1) converges uniformly in `S` for each `ω`, the optimal return
`K(ω) = max_S Φ(ω, s)` satisfies `K(ω) = max_{δ₁} {L(ω, δ₁) + P(δ₁) K(T_{δ₁} ω)}`, the
maximum over `δ₁` being attained. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
