Let d≥2d\ge2d≥2 be an integer. For f∈R[x,y]f\in\mathbb R[x,y]f∈R[x,y] let C={z∈C:f(Re⁡z,Im⁡z)=0}C=\{z\in\mathbb C: f(\operatorname{Re}z,\operatorname{Im}z)=0\}C={z∈C:f(Rez,Imz)=0} be its real zero set, identifying (x,y)(x,y)(x,y) with x+iyx+iyx+iy, and let Sym(C)\mathrm{Sym}(C)Sym(C) be the group of all Euclidean isometries TTT of C\mathbb CC with T(C)=CT(C)=CT(C)=C.

Then there exists f∈R[x,y]f\in\mathbb R[x,y]f∈R[x,y] such that:

  1. fff is irreducible in C[x,y]\mathbb C[x,y]C[x,y];
  2. fff has total degree ddd;
  3. CCC is infinite;
  4. CCC is not a circle: there are no c∈Cc\in\mathbb Cc∈C and real R>0R>0R>0 with C={z:∣z−c∣=R}C=\{z:|z-c|=R\}C={z:∣z−c∣=R};
  5. the full bound of Theorem 1 is attained:
∣Sym(C)∣=2d.|\mathrm{Sym}(C)|=2d.∣Sym(C)∣=2d.

This is the sharpness of the bound ∣Sym(C)∣≤2d|\mathrm{Sym}(C)|\le2d∣Sym(C)∣≤2d in Theorem 1, by a curve satisfying all the hypotheses of that theorem.

Formalization Note: the order is Nat.card of a subgroup of the group ℂ ≃ᵢ ℂ of isometric bijections; since its value is positive, finiteness is part of the conclusion.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
