Let G=(V,E,w)G=(V,E,w)G=(V,E,w) be a star graph (every edge contains a fixed centre ccc) with nonnegative weights, and let L(G)L(G)L(G) be its weighted Laplacian. Then for every real vector x∈RVx\in\mathbb R^Vx∈RV

xTL(G) x  ≤  (∑e∈Ewe+max⁡e∈Ewe) ∥x∥2,x^{\mathsf T}L(G)\,x\;\le\;\Bigl(\sum_{e\in E}w_e+\max_{e\in E}w_e\Bigr)\,\|x\|^2 ,xTL(G)x≤(e∈E∑we+e∈Emaxwe)∥x∥2,

that is, ∥L(G)∥≤∑e∈Ewe+max⁡e∈Ewe\|L(G)\|\le\sum_{e\in E}w_e+\max_{e\in E}w_e∥L(G)∥≤∑e∈Ewe+maxe∈Ewe.

In the proof of Lemma 1 the star Hamiltonian restricted to the Hamming-weight-one subspace is the Laplacian, so this bound is the spectral input of Lemma 1.

Formalization Note L(G)L(G)L(G) is real symmetric and positive semidefinite, so its norm is its largest eigenvalue, the maximum of the Rayleigh quotient; the statement is that quotient bound. The graph may have isolated vertices besides the star; max⁡e∈Ewe=0\max_{e\in E}w_e=0maxe∈Ewe=0 if E=∅E=\emptysetE=∅.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
