combinatoricserdos-problems

Let q,t,Nq,t,Nq,t,N be positive integers and c:Fin q→Nc:\mathrm{Fin}\,q\to\mathbb Nc:Finq→N with ∑ic(i)=N\sum_i c(i)=N∑ic(i)=N. If N≥q t(t+1)N\ge q\,t(t+1)N≥qt(t+1), then

(Nt)≤2 qt−1∑i(c(i)t).\binom Nt\le 2\,q^{t-1}\sum_i\binom{c(i)}{t}.(tN)≤2qt−1i∑(tc(i)).

Thus a constant fraction of the ttt-subsets of a sufficiently large, arbitrarily partitioned set lie entirely in one part. Context: Erdős Problem 624 asks whether H(n)−log⁡2n→∞H(n)-\log_2 n\to\inftyH(n)−log2n→∞, where H(n)H(n)H(n) is the least mmm such that some f:P(X)→Xf:\mathcal P(X)\to Xf:P(X)→X (∣X∣=n|X|=n∣X∣=n) satisfies f[P(Y)]=Xf[\mathcal P(Y)]=Xf[P(Y)]=X for all ∣Y∣≥m|Y|\ge m∣Y∣≥m. This lemma does NOT settle Problem 624 / PAIR; it is an auxiliary partition-counting tool used toward a rank-deficiency bound.

Formalization Note. Pure natural-number statement over Fin q → ℕ; no dependence on the Erdős 624 definitions module.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
