Let a Markov chain on a countable state space SSS have transition matrix PPP, transition costs g(i,j)g(i,j)g(i,j) and discount factor α∈(0,1)\alpha \in (0,1)α∈(0,1). Suppose that it has a unique invariant distribution π\piπ with π(i)>0\pi(i) > 0π(i)>0 for all iii (Assumption 1(a)), and that E0[g2(it,it+1)]<∞E_0[g^2(i_t,i_{t+1})] < \inftyE0[g2(it,it+1)]<∞ under the stationary law (Assumption 1(b)). Let gˉ(i)=E[g(it,it+1)∣it=i]=∑jpijg(i,j)\bar g(i) = E[g(i_t,i_{t+1}) \mid i_t = i] = \sum_j p_{ij}g(i,j)gˉ(i)=E[g(it,it+1)∣it=i]=∑jpijg(i,j) and

J∗(i)=E[∑t=0∞αtg(it,it+1) ∣ i0=i].J^*(i) = E\Big[\sum_{t=0}^\infty \alpha^t g(i_t,i_{t+1}) \,\Big|\, i_0 = i\Big].J∗(i)=E[t=0∑∞αtg(it,it+1)i0=i].

Then:

  1. for every iii, E[∑t=0∞αt∣g(it,it+1)∣∣i0=i]<∞E\big[\sum_{t=0}^\infty \alpha^t|g(i_t,i_{t+1})| \mid i_0 = i\big] < \inftyE[∑t=0∞αt∣g(it,it+1)∣∣i0=i]<∞, so J∗(i)J^*(i)J∗(i) is well defined and finite (Assumption 1(c) holds);
  2. gˉ\bar ggˉ and every PtgˉP^t\bar gPtgˉ are well defined;
  3. J∗∈L2(S,D)J^* \in L_2(S,D)J∗∈L2(S,D);
  4. at every state,
J∗=∑t=0∞(αP)tgˉ.J^* = \sum_{t=0}^\infty (\alpha P)^t \bar g.J∗=t=0∑∞(αP)tgˉ.

The lemma shows that Assumption 1(c) is a consequence of 1(a)–(b) and puts J∗J^*J∗ in the space in which the analysis runs.

Formalization Note. "J∗(i)J^*(i)J∗(i) well defined and finite" is the absolute integrability of the discounted cost series under the path law from iii, the same reading as Assumption 1(c). The series identity is stated pointwise, with (Ptgˉ)(i)(P^t\bar g)(i)(Ptgˉ)(i) the integral of gˉ\bar ggˉ against the ttt-step law from iii.

/-- **Lemma 2** (Tsitsiklis & Van Roy, LIDS-P-2322 (1996), p. 12). Under Assumptions 1(a)–(b),
`J*(i)` is well defined and finite for every `i` (the absolute series
`E[Σ_t α^t |g(i_t, i_{t+1})| | i_0 = i]` is finite, i.e. Assumption 1(c) holds), `J* ∈ L₂(S, D)`,
and `J* = Σ_{t ≥ 0} (αP)^t ḡ` with `ḡ(i) = E[g(i_t, i_{t+1}) | i_t = i]`. The conclusion also
records that `ḡ` and `P^t ḡ` are well defined. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
