Let AAA be a symmetric operator on a complex Hilbert space H\mathfrak{H}H and E∈RE \in \mathbb{R}E∈R. Then

  1. AAA is self-adjoint if and only if σ(A)⊆R\sigma(A) \subseteq \mathbb{R}σ(A)⊆R;
  2. AAA is self-adjoint with A−E≥0A - E \ge 0A−E≥0 if and only if σ(A)⊆[E,∞)\sigma(A) \subseteq [E, \infty)σ(A)⊆[E,∞);
  3. if AAA is self-adjoint, then for z∈C∖Rz \in \mathbb{C}\setminus\mathbb{R}z∈C∖R
∥RA(z)∥≤∣Im⁡(z)∣−1;\|R_A(z)\| \le |\operatorname{Im}(z)|^{-1};∥RA(z)∥≤∣Im(z)∣−1;
  1. if AAA is self-adjoint and A−E≥0A - E \ge 0A−E≥0, then ∥RA(λ)∥≤∣λ−E∣−1\|R_A(\lambda)\| \le |\lambda - E|^{-1}∥RA(λ)∥≤∣λ−E∣−1 for real λ<E\lambda < Eλ<E.

Here A−E≥0A - E \ge 0A−E≥0 means ⟨ψ,(A−E)ψ⟩≥0\langle \psi, (A - E)\psi \rangle \ge 0⟨ψ,(A−E)ψ⟩≥0 for all ψ∈D(A)\psi \in \mathfrak{D}(A)ψ∈D(A), and σ(A)\sigma(A)σ(A), RA(z)R_A(z)RA(z) are the spectrum and resolvent of Section 2.4.

Formalization Note. σ(A)\sigma(A)σ(A) is opSpectrum A, the complement of the set of zzz for which A−zA - zA−z has a bounded everywhere-defined two-sided inverse (not Mathlib's Banach-algebra spectrum). A−E≥0A - E \ge 0A−E≥0 is written E∥ψ∥2≤Re⁡⟨ψ,Aψ⟩E\|\psi\|^2 \le \operatorname{Re}\langle\psi, A\psi\rangleE∥ψ∥2≤Re⟨ψ,Aψ⟩. The norm bounds quantify over every bounded RRR that is the resolvent at the given point; by parts 1–2 such an RRR exists, and it is unique.

/-- Teschl, Theorem 2.18 (p. 77): for symmetric `A`,
(i) `A` is self-adjoint iff `σ(A) ⊆ ℝ`;
(ii) for `E ∈ ℝ`, `A` is self-adjoint with `A - E ≥ 0` iff `σ(A) ⊆ [E, ∞)`;
(iii) for self-adjoint `A` and `z ∉ ℝ`, `‖R_A(z)‖ ≤ |Im z|⁻¹`;
(iv) for self-adjoint `A` with `A - E ≥ 0` and real `λ < E`, `‖R_A(λ)‖ ≤ |λ - E|⁻¹`.
`A - E ≥ 0` means `E‖ψ‖² ≤ Re⟨ψ, Aψ⟩` for `ψ ∈ 𝔇(A)` (the form is real for symmetric `A`). -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Let HHH be a complex Hilbert space: a complete complex inner product space, with ⟨x,y⟩\langle x,y\rangle⟨x,y⟩ conjugate-linear in xxx. Let AAA be a partial C\mathbb CC-linear operator on HHH with domain D(A)\mathcal D(A)D(A), and assume IsSymmetric(A)\mathrm{IsSymmetric}(A)IsSymmetric(A).

The statement uses the following notation:

  • σ(A)⊆C\sigma(A)\subseteq\mathbb Cσ(A)⊆C is the set given by the imported definition TeschlQM.Shared.spectrum.
  • IsResolventAt(A,z,R)\mathrm{IsResolventAt}(A,z,R)IsResolventAt(A,z,R) is an imported predicate relating AAA, a number z∈Cz\in\mathbb Cz∈C and a bounded linear operator R:H→HR:H\to HR:H→H.
  • ∥R∥\|R\|∥R∥ is the operator norm.
  • IsSymmetric, spectrum and IsResolventAt are imported definitions whose code is not shown here.
  • Self-adjoint means A=A∗A=A^*A=A∗, with equal domains and values. A∗A^*A∗ is the usual adjoint when D(A)\mathcal D(A)D(A) is dense, and the zero operator on all of HHH otherwise.
  • For a real number EEE, write LBE(A)\mathrm{LB}_E(A)LBE(A) for the condition that E∥ψ∥2≤Re⁡⟨ψ,Aψ⟩E\|\psi\|^2\le\operatorname{Re}\langle\psi,A\psi\rangleE∥ψ∥2≤Re⟨ψ,Aψ⟩ for every ψ∈D(A)\psi\in\mathcal D(A)ψ∈D(A).

The statement is a conjunction of four parts.

  1. AAA is self-adjoint if and only if σ(A)⊆{z:Im⁡z=0}\sigma(A)\subseteq\{z:\operatorname{Im}z=0\}σ(A)⊆{z:Imz=0}.
  2. For every real EEE:
(A=A∗ and LBE(A))  ⟺  σ(A)⊆{z:Im⁡z=0, E≤Re⁡z}.\big(A=A^*\ \text{and}\ \mathrm{LB}_E(A)\big)\iff \sigma(A)\subseteq\{z:\operatorname{Im}z=0,\ E\le\operatorname{Re}z\}.(A=A∗ and LBE(A))⟺σ(A)⊆{z:Imz=0, E≤Rez}.
  1. Suppose AAA is self-adjoint. Then for every zzz with Im⁡z≠0\operatorname{Im}z\neq0Imz=0, and every bounded RRR with IsResolventAt(A,z,R)\mathrm{IsResolventAt}(A,z,R)IsResolventAt(A,z,R):
∥R∥≤1∣Im⁡z∣.\|R\|\le\frac{1}{|\operatorname{Im}z|}.∥R∥≤∣Imz∣1.
  1. Suppose AAA is self-adjoint, EEE is real and LBE(A)\mathrm{LB}_E(A)LBE(A) holds. Then for every real l<El<El<E, and every bounded RRR with IsResolventAt(A,l,R)\mathrm{IsResolventAt}(A,l,R)IsResolventAt(A,l,R):
∥R∥≤1∣l−E∣.\|R\|\le\frac{1}{|l-E|}.∥R∥≤∣l−E∣1.

In parts 3 and 4, the bound applies to every RRR satisfying the predicate. The statement does not assert that such an RRR exists. If none exists, those parts hold vacuously.

Degenerate cases:

  • The reciprocals are never taken of zero: Im⁡z≠0\operatorname{Im}z\neq0Imz=0 in part 3, and l<El<El<E in part 4.
  • If H={0}H=\{0\}H={0}, then LBE(A)\mathrm{LB}_E(A)LBE(A) holds for every EEE. The content of parts 1 and 2 then depends on what the imported σ(A)\sigma(A)σ(A) is for the zero operator on {0}\{0\}{0}.
  • If D(A)\mathcal D(A)D(A) is not dense, AAA cannot equal A∗A^*A∗. In that case part 1 asserts that σ(A)\sigma(A)σ(A) is not contained in R\mathbb RR.
