Diameter of a Cartesian product. Let P⊆EP\subseteq EP⊆E and Q⊆FQ\subseteq FQ⊆F be subsets of real vector spaces, and suppose the vertex-edge graphs of PPP and QQQ have padded combinatorial diameters at most BBB and CCC respectively (in the sense of DiamLE\mathrm{DiamLE}DiamLE). Then the Cartesian product

P×Q={(x,y)∣x∈P, y∈Q}P\times Q=\bigl\{(x,y)\mid x\in P,\ y\in Q\bigr\}P×Q={(x,y)∣x∈P, y∈Q}

has padded combinatorial diameter at most B+CB+CB+C.

Extreme points of a product are pairs of extreme points. An edge of PPP at a fixed extreme point of QQQ remains an edge of the product (and symmetrically). Concatenating a BBB-step walk in the first factor with a CCC-step walk in the second therefore yields a product walk of length B+CB+CB+C. Empty factors make the statement vacuous.

This is the standard product formula for graph diameter. It does not bound BBB or CCC themselves, and it does not prove the unrestricted polynomial Hirsch conjecture. It packages the fact already used implicitly for boxes (products of intervals).

Standard convex-geometry fact: diam(G(P)×G(Q)) = diam(G(P))+diam(G(Q)). Formalized for the Hirsch DiamLE predicate. Related: Hirsch.box_diameter_le_dimension is the interval-product special case.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
