This is the statement of the Millennium Prize Problem in Andrew Wiles' official description (p. 2): Conjecture (Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer). The Taylor expansion of L(C,s)L(C,s)L(C,s) at s=1s = 1s=1 has the form L(C,s)=c(s−1)r+higher order termsL(C,s) = c(s-1)^r + \text{higher order terms}L(C,s)=c(s−1)r+higher order terms with c≠0c \ne 0c=0 and r=rank⁡(C(Q))r = \operatorname{rank}(C(\mathbb{Q}))r=rank(C(Q)).

Let EEE be an elliptic curve over Q\mathbb{Q}Q, given by a Weierstrass equation with rational coefficients and non-zero discriminant. Let E(Q)E(\mathbb{Q})E(Q) be its group of rational points and L(E,s)=∑n≥1ann−sL(E,s) = \sum_{n \ge 1} a_n n^{-s}L(E,s)=∑n≥1ann−s its Hasse–Weil L-series, the Dirichlet series expansion of the Euler product over all primes of the local factors (1−app−s+p1−2s)−1(1 - a_p p^{-s} + p^{1-2s})^{-1}(1−app−s+p1−2s)−1 (good reduction), (1∓p−s)−1(1 \mp p^{-s})^{-1}(1∓p−s)−1 (split/non-split multiplicative reduction) and 111 (additive reduction), convergent for Re⁡s>3/2\operatorname{Re} s > 3/2Res>3/2. Then there is an entire function Λ:C→C\Lambda : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}Λ:C→C with Λ(s)=L(E,s)\Lambda(s) = L(E,s)Λ(s)=L(E,s) for Re⁡s>3/2\operatorname{Re} s > 3/2Res>3/2, and

ord⁡s=1Λ=rank⁡ZE(Q),\operatorname{ord}_{s=1} \Lambda = \operatorname{rank}_{\mathbb{Z}} E(\mathbb{Q}),ords=1Λ=rankZE(Q),

i.e. Λ(s)=c (s−1)r+O((s−1)r+1)\Lambda(s) = c\,(s-1)^r + O((s-1)^{r+1})Λ(s)=c(s−1)r+O((s−1)r+1) near s=1s = 1s=1 with c≠0c \ne 0c=0 and rrr the rank of E(Q)E(\mathbb{Q})E(Q).

The existence of Λ\LambdaΛ (Hasse's conjecture) is a theorem, by the modularity of elliptic curves over Q\mathbb{Q}Q; it is included in the statement so that the order of vanishing at s=1s = 1s=1, outside the region of convergence of the series, is meaningful, and it is recorded separately as a milestone. The equality of the two integers is open; it is known when the order of vanishing is 000 or 111 (Gross–Zagier, Kolyvagin), and for a majority of curves ordered by height (Bhargava–Skinner–Zhang), but for no curve of rank ≥2\ge 2≥2. A proof would settle the Millennium Prize Problem in the affirmative. The refined form of the conjecture (the value of ccc in terms of the Tate–Shafarevich group, the regulator, the real period and the Tamagawa numbers) is not part of this statement.

Formalization Note The order of vanishing is Mathlib's analyticOrderAt Λ 1, valued in N∪{∞}\mathbb{N} \cup \{\infty\}N∪{∞} and equal to ∞\infty∞ exactly when Λ\LambdaΛ vanishes identically near 111; the equation with the natural number BSD.rank W therefore also asserts that Λ≢0\Lambda \not\equiv 0Λ≡0 near 111. The L-series is Mathlib's WeierstrassCurve.LSeries, which includes the Euler factors at the bad primes (Wiles' L∗(C,s)L^*(C,s)L∗(C,s)) and takes the junk value 000 where the Dirichlet series diverges; BSD.IsLFunction constrains Λ\LambdaΛ only on Re⁡s>3/2\operatorname{Re} s > 3/2Res>3/2, where the series is honest. The rank is Module.finrank ℤ of the point group, which is the rrr of E(Q)≃Zr⊕TE(\mathbb{Q}) \simeq \mathbb{Z}^r \oplus TE(Q)≃Zr⊕T by Mordell's theorem. The hypothesis IsElliptic is Δ≠0\Delta \ne 0Δ=0.

Declaration BSD.birch_swinnerton_dyer. Let WWW be a Weierstrass curve over Q\mathbb{Q}Q, i.e. an arbitrary quintuple of rational numbers (a1,a2,a3,a4,a6)∈Q5(a_1, a_2, a_3, a_4, a_6) \in \mathbb{Q}^5(a1,a2,a3,a4,a6)∈Q5, thought of as the equation

Y2+a1XY+a3Y=X3+a2X2+a4X+a6.Y^2 + a_1 XY + a_3 Y = X^3 + a_2 X^2 + a_4 X + a_6 .Y2+a1XY+a3Y=X3+a2X2+a4X+a6.

Assume (as a typeclass hypothesis) that WWW is elliptic in Mathlib's sense: the discriminant

Δ(W)=−b22b8−8b43−27b62+9b2b4b6\Delta(W) = -b_2^2 b_8 - 8 b_4^3 - 27 b_6^2 + 9 b_2 b_4 b_6Δ(W)=−b22b8−8b43−27b62+9b2b4b6

(with b2=a12+4a2b_2 = a_1^2 + 4a_2b2=a12+4a2, b4=2a4+a1a3b_4 = 2a_4 + a_1 a_3b4=2a4+a1a3, b6=a32+4a6b_6 = a_3^2 + 4a_6b6=a32+4a6, b8=a12a6+4a2a6−a1a3a4+a2a32−a42b_8 = a_1^2 a_6 + 4a_2 a_6 - a_1 a_3 a_4 + a_2 a_3^2 - a_4^2b8=a12a6+4a2a6−a1a3a4+a2a32−a42) is a unit of Q\mathbb{Q}Q; since Q\mathbb{Q}Q is a field this is exactly the condition Δ(W)≠0\Delta(W) \neq 0Δ(W)=0. No other hypothesis is placed on WWW.

The theorem asserts that there exists (at least one; not claimed unique) a function Λ:C→C\Lambda : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}Λ:C→C satisfying the following three conditions simultaneously.

(i) Entire. Λ\LambdaΛ is complex-differentiable at every point of C\mathbb{C}C.

(ii) Agreement with Mathlib's Dirichlet series on a half-plane. For every s∈Cs \in \mathbb{C}s∈C with Re⁡s>32\operatorname{Re} s > \tfrac{3}{2}Res>23 (strict inequality),

Λ(s)=LW(s),\Lambda(s) = L_W(s),Λ(s)=LW(s),

where LW(s)L_W(s)LW(s) is the following specific complex number. Let LW:N→Z\mathcal{L}_W : \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{Z}LW:N→Z be the arithmetic function described in (ii-a) below (with LW(0)=0\mathcal{L}_W(0) = 0LW(0)=0). Then

LW(s)=∑n=0∞′  tn(s),tn(s)={0n=0,LW(n)nsn≥1,L_W(s) = {\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}}' \; t_n(s), \qquad t_n(s) = \begin{cases} 0 & n = 0,\\[2pt] \dfrac{\mathcal{L}_W(n)}{n^{s}} & n \geq 1,\end{cases}LW(s)=n=0∑∞′tn(s),tn(s)=⎩⎨⎧0nsLW(n)n=0,n≥1,

where the primed sum is Mathlib's unconditional sum: if the family (tn(s))n(t_n(s))_n(tn(s))n is summable in C\mathbb{C}C (for complex numbers this is the same as absolute convergence) it is the value of the sum, and otherwise it is the junk value 000. Nothing in the statement asserts that the series converges for any sss; wherever it fails to converge with Re⁡s>32\operatorname{Re} s > \tfrac32Res>23, condition (ii) requires Λ(s)=0\Lambda(s) = 0Λ(s)=0 there. Here nsn^sns is the complex power exp⁡(slog⁡n)\exp(s \log n)exp(slogn) for n≥1n \ge 1n≥1, and LW(n)∈Z\mathcal{L}_W(n) \in \mathbb{Z}LW(n)∈Z is coerced to C\mathbb{C}C.

(ii-a) The arithmetic function LW\mathcal{L}_WLW (the "L-function as a formal Dirichlet series"). Let O\mathcal{O}O be Mathlib's ring of integers of the number field Q\mathbb{Q}Q, and let p\mathfrak{p}p range over the height-one spectrum of O\mathcal{O}O, i.e. over all nonzero prime ideals of O\mathcal{O}O. For each such p\mathfrak{p}p, let KpK_\mathfrak{p}Kp be the completion of Q\mathbb{Q}Q with respect to the p\mathfrak{p}p-adic valuation and let Rp⊆KpR_\mathfrak{p} \subseteq K_\mathfrak{p}Rp⊆Kp be its valuation ring (the elements of valuation ≤1\le 1≤1), a discrete valuation ring with maximal ideal mp\mathfrak{m}_\mathfrak{p}mp and residue field κp=Rp/mp\kappa_\mathfrak{p} = R_\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{m}_\mathfrak{p}κp=Rp/mp. Write WpW_\mathfrak{p}Wp for the base change of WWW to KpK_\mathfrak{p}Kp (same five coefficients, viewed in KpK_\mathfrak{p}Kp). Then

LW=∏p′  Ep,\mathcal{L}_W = {\prod_{\mathfrak{p}}}' \; E_\mathfrak{p},LW=p∏′Ep,

the primed product being Mathlib's unconditional infinite product ∏′\prod'∏′ of arithmetic functions under Dirichlet convolution, taken in the topology of pointwise convergence where Z\mathbb{Z}Z carries the discrete topology (so the product converges iff for every nnn the nnn-th coefficient of finite partial products is eventually constant). If the family (Ep)p(E_\mathfrak{p})_\mathfrak{p}(Ep)p is not multipliable in this sense, the product is the junk value 111, the arithmetic function ε\varepsilonε with ε(1)=1\varepsilon(1) = 1ε(1)=1 and ε(n)=0\varepsilon(n) = 0ε(n)=0 for n≠1n \ne 1n=1. The local factor Ep:N→ZE_\mathfrak{p} : \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{Z}Ep:N→Z is built as follows.

  • Minimal model. Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ is a chosen (by the axiom of choice) change of variables of WpW_\mathfrak{p}Wp over KpK_\mathfrak{p}Kp that is minimal: it is integral (equal to the base change of some Weierstrass curve with coefficients in RpR_\mathfrak{p}Rp), and among all changes of variables CCC of WpW_\mathfrak{p}Wp that are integral, the multiplicative valuation v(Δ(C⋅Wp))∈Zm0v(\Delta(C \cdot W_\mathfrak{p})) \in \mathbb{Z}^{\mathrm{m}0}v(Δ(C⋅Wp))∈Zm0 (which is ≤1\le 1≤1 for integral curves; larger multiplicative valuation means smaller additive valuation) is maximal at C=1C = 1C=1, i.e. at Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ itself.
  • Residue-field cardinality. qp:=Nat.card⁡(κp)∈Zq_\mathfrak{p} := \operatorname{Nat.card}(\kappa_\mathfrak{p}) \in \mathbb{Z}qp:=Nat.card(κp)∈Z, the number of elements of κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp if κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp is finite, and the junk value 000 if κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp is infinite.
  • Reduction and point count. W~p\widetilde{W}_\mathfrak{p}Wp is the Weierstrass curve over κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp obtained from a chosen integral model of Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ (a curve over RpR_\mathfrak{p}Rp whose base change to KpK_\mathfrak{p}Kp is Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′) by reducing each coefficient modulo mp\mathfrak{m}_\mathfrak{p}mp. Let Np:=Nat.card⁡(W~p(κp))N_\mathfrak{p} := \operatorname{Nat.card}\bigl(\widetilde{W}_\mathfrak{p}(\kappa_\mathfrak{p})\bigr)Np:=Nat.card(Wp(κp)), where W~p(κp)\widetilde{W}_\mathfrak{p}(\kappa_\mathfrak{p})Wp(κp) is the type consisting of one point "zero" (at infinity) together with all pairs (x,y)∈κp2(x,y) \in \kappa_\mathfrak{p}^2(x,y)∈κp2 that satisfy the Weierstrass equation of W~p\widetilde{W}_\mathfrak{p}Wp and are nonsingular there (at least one of the two partial derivatives a1y−(3x2+2a2x+a4)a_1 y - (3x^2 + 2a_2 x + a_4)a1y−(3x2+2a2x+a4), 2y+a1x+a32y + a_1 x + a_32y+a1x+a3 of the reduced curve is nonzero at (x,y)(x,y)(x,y)). Again Nat.card⁡\operatorname{Nat.card}Nat.card is 000 if this type is infinite. Set ap:=qp+1−Np∈Za_\mathfrak{p} := q_\mathfrak{p} + 1 - N_\mathfrak{p} \in \mathbb{Z}ap:=qp+1−Np∈Z.
  • Local polynomial fp(T)∈Z[T]f_\mathfrak{p}(T) \in \mathbb{Z}[T]fp(T)∈Z[T], decided by the first applicable case (classically):
    1. if Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ has good reduction — meaning Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ is minimal and v(Δ(Wp′))=1v(\Delta(W'_\mathfrak{p})) = 1v(Δ(Wp′))=1 (the discriminant is a unit of RpR_\mathfrak{p}Rp) — then fp(T)=1−apT+qpT2f_\mathfrak{p}(T) = 1 - a_\mathfrak{p} T + q_\mathfrak{p} T^2fp(T)=1−apT+qpT2;
    2. else if Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ has split multiplicative reduction — meaning it is minimal, v(Δ(Wp′))<1v(\Delta(W'_\mathfrak{p})) < 1v(Δ(Wp′))<1, v(c4(Wp′))=1v(c_4(W'_\mathfrak{p})) = 1v(c4(Wp′))=1 where c4=b22−24b4c_4 = b_2^2 - 24 b_4c4=b22−24b4, and, writing III for the chosen integral model, the polynomial c4(I) T2+a1(I)c4(I) T−(54 b6(I)−3 b2(I)b4(I)+a2(I)c4(I))c_4(I)\,T^2 + a_1(I) c_4(I)\, T - \bigl(54\, b_6(I) - 3\, b_2(I) b_4(I) + a_2(I) c_4(I)\bigr)c4(I)T2+a1(I)c4(I)T−(54b6(I)−3b2(I)b4(I)+a2(I)c4(I)) with coefficients reduced into κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp lies in the multiplicative closure of the constant polynomials and the monic linear polynomials over κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp (i.e. splits into linear factors) — then fp(T)=1−Tf_\mathfrak{p}(T) = 1 - Tfp(T)=1−T;
    3. else if Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ has multiplicative reduction (minimal, v(Δ)<1v(\Delta) < 1v(Δ)<1, v(c4)=1v(c_4) = 1v(c4)=1, but the quadratic above does not split) then fp(T)=1+Tf_\mathfrak{p}(T) = 1 + Tfp(T)=1+T;
    4. otherwise (in particular in the remaining exhaustive case v(Δ)<1v(\Delta) < 1v(Δ)<1 and v(c4)<1v(c_4) < 1v(c4)<1, "additive reduction") fp(T)=1f_\mathfrak{p}(T) = 1fp(T)=1.
  • Local power series. gp(T)∈Z[[T]]g_\mathfrak{p}(T) \in \mathbb{Z}[[T]]gp(T)∈Z[[T]] is the formal inverse of fp(T)f_\mathfrak{p}(T)fp(T) computed by the recursive inverse-of-a-unit formula with the constant term taken to be the unit 111; since every fpf_\mathfrak{p}fp above has constant coefficient 111, this is the genuine reciprocal 1/fp(T)1/f_\mathfrak{p}(T)1/fp(T).
  • Local Euler factor. If qp>1q_\mathfrak{p} > 1qp>1 then Ep(n)=[Tk] gpE_\mathfrak{p}(n) = [T^k]\, g_\mathfrak{p}Ep(n)=[Tk]gp when n=qp kn = q_\mathfrak{p}^{\,k}n=qpk for some k≥0k \ge 0k≥0, and Ep(n)=0E_\mathfrak{p}(n) = 0Ep(n)=0 if nnn is not a power of qpq_\mathfrak{p}qp (in particular Ep(0)=0E_\mathfrak{p}(0)=0Ep(0)=0). If qp≤1q_\mathfrak{p} \le 1qp≤1 (which happens exactly when the junk value qp=0q_\mathfrak{p}=0qp=0 occurs, or qp=1q_\mathfrak{p}=1qp=1), then EpE_\mathfrak{p}Ep is instead the junk value [T0]gp⋅ε=ε[T^0] g_\mathfrak{p} \cdot \varepsilon = \varepsilon[T0]gp⋅ε=ε, the multiplicative identity.

(iii) Order of vanishing at 111 equals the rank. In the extended natural numbers N∪{∞}\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}N∪{∞},

ord⁡z=1Λ=rank⁡(W),\operatorname{ord}_{z=1} \Lambda = \operatorname{rank}(W),ordz=1Λ=rank(W),

where the right-hand side is the natural number rank⁡(W)\operatorname{rank}(W)rank(W) described in (iii-b), coerced into N∪{∞}\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}N∪{∞}, and the left-hand side is Mathlib's analyticOrderAt, defined by cases:

  • if Λ\LambdaΛ is not analytic at 111, the value is the junk value 000 — but under (i), complex differentiability on all of C\mathbb{C}C implies analyticity at 111, so this case cannot occur for a Λ\LambdaΛ satisfying (i);
  • if Λ\LambdaΛ is analytic at 111 and vanishes identically on some neighbourhood of 111, the value is ∞\infty∞;
  • otherwise the value is the unique n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N such that, on some neighbourhood of 111, Λ(z)=(z−1)n g(z)\Lambda(z) = (z-1)^n\, g(z)Λ(z)=(z−1)ng(z) with ggg analytic at 111 and g(1)≠0g(1) \ne 0g(1)=0 (so n=0n = 0n=0 iff Λ(1)≠0\Lambda(1) \ne 0Λ(1)=0).

Because the right-hand side is a finite natural number, equality in N∪{∞}\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}N∪{∞} excludes the value ∞\infty∞: any Λ\LambdaΛ witnessing the theorem is not identically zero near 111 (hence, being entire, not identically zero on C\mathbb{C}C). In particular the constant function Λ≡0\Lambda \equiv 0Λ≡0 does not satisfy (iii). Conversely, by (i) and the identity theorem, if a witness exists it is uniquely determined by its values on {Re⁡s>32}\{\operatorname{Re} s > \tfrac32\}{Res>23}, i.e. by the function LWL_WLW there, including any junk zeros of LWL_WLW arising from non-summability.

(iii-b) The natural number rank⁡(W)\operatorname{rank}(W)rank(W). Let W(Q)W(\mathbb{Q})W(Q) denote the type of points of WWW in affine coordinates: the single point "zero" (at infinity) together with all (x,y)∈Q2(x,y) \in \mathbb{Q}^2(x,y)∈Q2 satisfying y2+a1xy+a3y=x3+a2x2+a4x+a6y^2 + a_1 xy + a_3 y = x^3 + a_2 x^2 + a_4 x + a_6y2+a1xy+a3y=x3+a2x2+a4x+a6 and nonsingular there (at least one of a1y−(3x2+2a2x+a4)a_1 y - (3x^2 + 2a_2 x + a_4)a1y−(3x2+2a2x+a4), 2y+a1x+a32y + a_1 x + a_32y+a1x+a3 nonzero). Mathlib equips W(Q)W(\mathbb{Q})W(Q) with the abelian group structure given by the chord–tangent (secant–tangent) law with "zero" as identity, and hence with a Z\mathbb{Z}Z-module structure. Then

rank⁡(W):=finrank⁡ZW(Q)=toNat⁡(sup⁡{ ∣S∣  :  S⊆W(Q) is Z-linearly independent }),\operatorname{rank}(W) := \operatorname{finrank}_{\mathbb{Z}} W(\mathbb{Q}) = \operatorname{toNat}\Bigl(\sup\bigl\{\, |S| \;:\; S \subseteq W(\mathbb{Q}) \text{ is } \mathbb{Z}\text{-linearly independent}\,\bigr\}\Bigr),rank(W):=finrankZW(Q)=toNat(sup{∣S∣:S⊆W(Q) is Z-linearly independent}),

where the supremum of cardinals is taken over all subsets SSS such that no nontrivial finite Z\mathbb{Z}Z-linear combination of distinct elements of SSS is zero (so torsion points never belong to such an SSS), and toNat⁡\operatorname{toNat}toNat sends a finite cardinal to the corresponding natural number and every infinite cardinal to 000. The statement does not assume or assert that W(Q)W(\mathbb{Q})W(Q) is finitely generated; if the supremum above is infinite, rank⁡(W)=0\operatorname{rank}(W) = 0rank(W)=0 by convention, and condition (iii) then requires Λ(1)≠0\Lambda(1) \neq 0Λ(1)=0.

Summary of the literal claim. For every quintuple (a1,a2,a3,a4,a6)∈Q5(a_1,a_2,a_3,a_4,a_6) \in \mathbb{Q}^5(a1,a2,a3,a4,a6)∈Q5 with Δ≠0\Delta \ne 0Δ=0, there is an entire function Λ\LambdaΛ that coincides on the open half-plane Re⁡s>32\operatorname{Re} s > \tfrac32Res>23 with the (junk-tolerant) Dirichlet series LWL_WLW of the Euler product of the local factors EpE_\mathfrak{p}Ep described above, and whose order of vanishing at s=1s = 1s=1 is the finite natural number finrank⁡ZW(Q)\operatorname{finrank}_{\mathbb{Z}} W(\mathbb{Q})finrankZW(Q) (with the conventions: order ∞\infty∞ excluded, infinite Z\mathbb{Z}Z-rank read as 000, and non-convergent sums or products, or infinite residue fields, read as 000 or ε\varepsilonε respectively).
