Let f:Rn→Rf:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}f:Rn→R (n≥1n \ge 1n≥1) be twice differentiable with LLL-Lipschitz Hessian (L>0L > 0L>0). Let {xk}k≥0\{x_k\}_{k\ge0}{xk}k≥0 be generated by the relaxed method (3.5): xk+1=TMk(xk)x_{k+1} = T_{M_k}(x_k)xk+1=TMk(xk) with Mk∈(0,2L]M_k \in (0, 2L]Mk∈(0,2L], where TMk(xk)T_{M_k}(x_k)TMk(xk) is a global minimizer of the cubic model at xkx_kxk. Write

δk=L∥f′(xk)∥λn2(f′′(xk)).\delta_k = \frac{L\|f'(x_k)\|}{\lambda_n^2(f''(x_k))}.δk=λn2(f′′(xk))L∥f′(xk)∥.

Suppose f′′(x0)≻0f''(x_0) \succ 0f′′(x0)≻0 and δ0≤1/4\delta_0 \le 1/4δ0≤1/4. Then for all k≥0k \ge 0k≥0 the value δk\delta_kδk is well defined, i.e. f′′(xk)≻0f''(x_k) \succ 0f′′(xk)≻0, and

δk+1≤32(δk1−δk)2≤83 δk2≤23 δk.\delta_{k+1} \le \frac32\left(\frac{\delta_k}{1-\delta_k}\right)^2 \le \frac83\,\delta_k^2 \le \frac23\,\delta_k .δk+1≤23(1−δkδk)2≤38δk2≤32δk.

So δk\delta_kδk converges to zero quadratically, and every iterate stays in the region where the Hessian is positive definite.

Formalization Note "Well defined" is rendered as λn(f′′(xk))>0\lambda_n(f''(x_k)) > 0λn(f′′(xk))>0 for every kkk, and each of the three inequalities of the chain is stated for every k≥0k \ge 0k≥0. The mission takes F=RnF = \mathbb{R}^nF=Rn: fff is twice differentiable and Assumption 1 holds on all of Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn (the relaxed method has no descent test that would keep the iterates in a smaller set). λn\lambda_nλn is lamMin, δ\deltaδ is deltaMeasure, and the index is 0-based.

/-- Nesterov–Polyak 2006, Theorem 3, item 1, (3.6), p. 187, in the case `F = ℝⁿ`:
let `f″(x₀) ≻ 0` and `δ₀ ≤ 1/4`, and let `{x_k}` be generated by the relaxed method (3.5).
Then for all `k ≥ 0` the value `δ_k` is well defined (`λₙ(f″(x_k)) > 0`) and
`δ_{k+1} ≤ (3/2)(δ_k/(1 − δ_k))² ≤ (8/3)δ_k² ≤ (2/3)δ_k`. -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Fix n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N with n>0n > 0n>0, and work in Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn with the Euclidean norm. Let f:Rn→Rf : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}f:Rn→R, g:Rn→Rng : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^ng:Rn→Rn, HHH an operator-valued map, and L∈RL \in \mathbb{R}L∈R. Assume:

  • fff has gradient g(x)g(x)g(x) at every xxx;
  • ggg has Fréchet derivative H(x)H(x)H(x) at every xxx;
  • L>0L > 0L>0;
  • ∥H(x)−H(y)∥≤L∥x−y∥\|H(x) - H(y)\| \le L\|x - y\|∥H(x)−H(y)∥≤L∥x−y∥ for all x,yx, yx,y, in operator norm.

Let (xk)k≥0(x_k)_{k\ge0}(xk)k≥0 be a sequence in Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn and (Mk)k≥0(M_k)_{k\ge0}(Mk)k≥0 a sequence of reals, and assume that for every kkk:

  • 0<Mk≤2L0 < M_k \le 2L0<Mk≤2L;
  • CubicStepg,H(Mk,xk,xk+1)\mathrm{CubicStep}_{g,H}(M_k, x_k, x_{k+1})CubicStepg,H(Mk,xk,xk+1) holds. This is an imported predicate whose body is not shown here.

Write

δk=L ∥g(xk)∥λmin⁡(H(xk))2,\delta_k = \frac{L\,\|g(x_k)\|}{\lambda_{\min}(H(x_k))^2},δk=λmin(H(xk))2L∥g(xk)∥,

with the value 000 whenever the denominator is 000. Here λmin⁡\lambda_{\min}λmin is an imported real-valued function on operators. Its body is not shown here. Finally assume λmin⁡(H(x0))>0\lambda_{\min}(H(x_0)) > 0λmin(H(x0))>0 and δ0≤14\delta_0 \le \tfrac14δ0≤41.

The conclusion is that for every k≥0k \ge 0k≥0 all four of the following hold:

λmin⁡(H(xk))>0,\lambda_{\min}(H(x_k)) > 0,λmin(H(xk))>0, δk+1  ≤  32(δk1−δk)2  ≤  83 δk2  ≤  23 δk.\delta_{k+1} \;\le\; \tfrac32\Big(\frac{\delta_k}{1 - \delta_k}\Big)^2 \;\le\; \tfrac83\,\delta_k^2 \;\le\; \tfrac23\,\delta_k .δk+1≤23(1−δkδk)2≤38δk2≤32δk.

The first conjunct makes every δk\delta_kδk a genuine quotient. Since L>0L > 0L>0, every δk\delta_kδk is also ≥0\ge 0≥0.

Degenerate cases and consequences:

  • The case n=0n = 0n=0 is excluded by hypothesis.
  • If δk=1\delta_k = 1δk=1, the quotient δk/(1−δk)\delta_k/(1-\delta_k)δk/(1−δk) would default to 000. However, the last inequality 83δk2≤23δk\tfrac83\delta_k^2 \le \tfrac23\delta_k38δk2≤32δk holds exactly when 0≤δk≤140 \le \delta_k \le \tfrac140≤δk≤41, so the conclusion itself asserts δk∈[0,14]\delta_k \in [0, \tfrac14]δk∈[0,41] for all kkk, and that default never comes into play.
  • The theorem is vacuous if no pair of sequences satisfies the run conditions. Whether that happens depends on the imported predicate CubicStep\mathrm{CubicStep}CubicStep, which is not shown here.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
