Syracuse valuation vector and its sum

collatznumber-theory

For a natural number nnn, let ν2\nu_2ν2 denote the 2-adic valuation. The Syracuse valuation at nnn is ν2(3n+1)\nu_2(3n+1)ν2(3n+1), the exponent of 222 removed in one accelerated Collatz step. For n0≥0n_0 \ge 0n0≥0, the valuation vector of length n0n_0n0 at nnn records these valuations along the first n0n_0n0 Syracuse iterates:

a⃗(n0)(n)=(ν2(3 Syrj(n)+1))j<n0,\vec{a}^{(n_0)}(n) = \bigl(\nu_2(3\,\mathrm{Syr}^j(n)+1)\bigr)_{j<n_0},a(n0)(n)=(ν2(3Syrj(n)+1))j<n0,

and the valuation sum is the sum of its coordinates.

These are the basic random variables in Tao's analysis of Syracuse orbits (the heuristic is that they behave like independent geometric random variables of mean 222), so they are shared infrastructure for any formalization of Proposition 1.9 and its consequences.

Formalization Note syrVal is Nat.factorization (3 * n + 1) 2, valVec is the vector above as a function on Fin n_0, and valSum is its coordinate sum. The Syracuse map itself is syracuseStep.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
