Let EEE be a real Banach space, let fff be a lower semicontinuous proper convex function on EEE, and let j(x)=12∥x∥2j(x) = \tfrac12\|x\|^2j(x)=21∥x∥2. Then the conjugate (f+j)∗(f+j)^*(f+j)∗ is finite and continuous throughout E∗E^*E∗: there is a continuous real-valued function hhh on E∗E^*E∗ (with its norm topology) such that

(f+j)∗(x∗)=h(x∗)for every x∗∈E∗.(f + j)^*(x^*) = h(x^*) \qquad \text{for every } x^* \in E^* .(f+j)∗(x∗)=h(x∗)for every x∗∈E∗.

This is what makes the finite-and-continuous case of Theorem A (Minty's theorem) applicable to (f+j)∗(f+j)^*(f+j)∗ on E∗E^*E∗.

Formalization Note "Finite and continuous" is encoded as the existence of a continuous h:E∗→Rh : E^* \to \mathbb{R}h:E∗→R whose cast to EReal equals (f+j)∗(f+j)^*(f+j)∗ everywhere. The paper derives this from the inf-convolution formula (f+j)∗=f∗ □ j∗(f+j)^* = f^* \,\square\, j^*(f+j)∗=f∗□j∗; that formula is not part of this statement.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. EEE is a real Banach space and E∗E^*E∗ is its continuous dual with the operator-norm topology. The function f:E→R‾f : E \to \overline{\mathbb{R}}f:E→R has two hypotheses:

  • fff satisfies the imported predicate Shared.ProperConvex. It is not shown here; the name suggests "proper convex".
  • fff is lower semicontinuous for the norm topology.

Two imported objects appear, not shown here:

  • qqq is Shared.halfSqNorm. The name suggests q(y)=12∥y∥2q(y) = \tfrac12\|y\|^2q(y)=21∥y∥2.
  • g∗g^*g∗ is Shared.conj g. The name suggests the Fenchel conjugate.

Let g=f+qg = f + qg=f+q, meaning g(y)=f(y)+q(y)g(y) = f(y) + q(y)g(y)=f(y)+q(y) with extended-real addition.

Claim. There is a function h:E∗→Rh : E^* \to \mathbb{R}h:E∗→R, continuous for the norm topology on E∗E^*E∗, such that for every x∗∈E∗x^* \in E^*x∗∈E∗,

g∗(x∗)=h(x∗).g^*(x^*) = h(x^*).g∗(x∗)=h(x∗).

So g∗g^*g∗ is finite everywhere on E∗E^*E∗ (never ±∞\pm\infty±∞) and is norm-continuous as a real-valued function.

Degenerate cases. If E={0}E = \{0\}E={0}, the claim reduces to g∗(0)g^*(0)g∗(0) being a finite real number.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
