For U,V∈SU(2)U,V\in SU(2)U,V∈SU(2) write [ ⁣[U,V] ⁣]=UVU−1V−1[\![U,V]\!]=UVU^{-1}V^{-1}[[U,V]]=UVU−1V−1 for the group commutator. For ϵ≥0\epsilon\ge0ϵ≥0 let

Sϵ={U∈SU(2):∥I−U∥≤ϵ}S_\epsilon=\{U\in SU(2):\|I-U\|\le\epsilon\}Sϵ={U∈SU(2):∥I−U∥≤ϵ}

be the ϵ\epsilonϵ-ball around the identity, with ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\|∥⋅∥ the spectral norm. For Γ,S⊆SU(2)\Gamma,S\subseteq SU(2)Γ,S⊆SU(2), Γ\GammaΓ is a δ\deltaδ-net for SSS if every A∈SA\in SA∈S has some U∈ΓU\in\GammaU∈Γ with ∥A−U∥≤δ\|A-U\|\le\delta∥A−U∥≤δ.

The lemma says there are constants C>0C>0C>0 and ϵ0>0\epsilon_0>0ϵ0>0 such that, for every 0<ϵ≤ϵ00<\epsilon\le\epsilon_00<ϵ≤ϵ0 and every Γ⊆SU(2)\Gamma\subseteq SU(2)Γ⊆SU(2), the following holds. If Γ\GammaΓ is an ϵ2\epsilon^2ϵ2-net for SϵS_\epsilonSϵ, then

[ ⁣[Γ,Γ] ⁣]={[ ⁣[U,V] ⁣]:U,V∈Γ} is a Cϵ3-net for Sϵ2.[\![\Gamma,\Gamma]\!]=\{[\![U,V]\!]:U,V\in\Gamma\}\ \text{is a } C\epsilon^3\text{-net for } S_{\epsilon^2}.[[Γ,Γ]]={[[U,V]]:U,V∈Γ} is a Cϵ3-net for Sϵ2.

This is the key step of the Solovay–Kitaev construction. Applied recursively, it turns a coarse net near the identity into nets of doubly-exponentially improving precision.

Formalization Note The source writes O(ϵ3)O(\epsilon^3)O(ϵ3) as ϵ→0\epsilon\to0ϵ→0. Here it is written as explicit constants CCC and ϵ0\epsilon_0ϵ0, chosen before Γ\GammaΓ, because the source's recursion uses one constant at every level.

/-- Childs, Lemma 2.3, PDF p. 16. If `Γ ⊆ SU(2)` is an `ϵ²`-net for `S_ϵ = {U ∈ SU(2) :
‖I − U‖ ≤ ϵ}`, then `⟦Γ, Γ⟧ = {U V U⁻¹ V⁻¹ : U, V ∈ Γ}` is an `O(ϵ³)`-net for `S_{ϵ²}`.
The `O(ϵ³)` is with respect to `ϵ → 0` (PDF p. 17), with a constant independent of `Γ` (the
recursion on p. 16 uses one constant `k` at every level): there are `C > 0` and `ϵ₀ > 0` such
that for every `0 < ϵ ≤ ϵ₀` and every such `Γ`, `⟦Γ, Γ⟧` is a `C ϵ³`-net for `S_{ϵ²}`. -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Notation.

  • SU(2)\mathrm{SU}(2)SU(2) denotes the group of 2×22 \times 22×2 complex unitary matrices with determinant 111.
  • ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\|∥⋅∥ is the spectral norm.
  • For r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R}r∈R, the ball around the identity is
Ball(r)={U∈SU(2):∥I−U∥≤r}.\mathrm{Ball}(r) = \{U \in \mathrm{SU}(2) : \|I - U\| \le r\}.Ball(r)={U∈SU(2):∥I−U∥≤r}.
  • For sets Γ,S⊆SU(2)\Gamma, S \subseteq \mathrm{SU}(2)Γ,S⊆SU(2) and δ∈R\delta \in \mathbb{R}δ∈R, say "Γ\GammaΓ is a δ\deltaδ-net for SSS" if every A∈SA \in SA∈S has some U∈ΓU \in \GammaU∈Γ with ∥A−U∥≤δ\|A - U\| \le \delta∥A−U∥≤δ. The set Γ\GammaΓ is not required to lie inside SSS.
  • The commutator set of Γ\GammaΓ is
[Γ,Γ]={UVU−1V−1:U,V∈Γ}.[\Gamma, \Gamma] = \{U V U^{-1} V^{-1} : U, V \in \Gamma\}.[Γ,Γ]={UVU−1V−1:U,V∈Γ}.

Group inverses in SU(2)\mathrm{SU}(2)SU(2) are conjugate transposes.

Statement. There exist real constants C>0C > 0C>0 and ε0>0\varepsilon_0 > 0ε0>0 such that the following holds. For every real ε\varepsilonε with 0<ε≤ε00 < \varepsilon \le \varepsilon_00<ε≤ε0 and every set Γ⊆SU(2)\Gamma \subseteq \mathrm{SU}(2)Γ⊆SU(2):

if Γ is an ε2-net for Ball(ε), then [Γ,Γ] is a Cε3-net for Ball(ε2).\text{if } \Gamma \text{ is an } \varepsilon^2\text{-net for } \mathrm{Ball}(\varepsilon), \text{ then } [\Gamma, \Gamma] \text{ is a } C\varepsilon^3\text{-net for } \mathrm{Ball}(\varepsilon^2).if Γ is an ε2-net for Ball(ε), then [Γ,Γ] is a Cε3-net for Ball(ε2).

The constants CCC and ε0\varepsilon_0ε0 are asserted only to exist; they are universal, independent of ε\varepsilonε and Γ\GammaΓ.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
