Let C^=C∪{∞}\widehat{\mathbb C}=\mathbb C\cup\{\infty\}C=C∪{∞} be the Riemann sphere. A matrix g∈GL2(C)g\in\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb C)g∈GL2(C) with rows (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) and (c,d)(c,d)(c,d) acts on C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C by the Möbius transformation Mg(z)=az+bcz+dM_g(z)=\dfrac{az+b}{cz+d}Mg(z)=cz+daz+b, with the usual conventions: if c≠0c\ne0c=0 then Mg(−d/c)=∞M_g(-d/c)=\inftyMg(−d/c)=∞ and Mg(∞)=a/cM_g(\infty)=a/cMg(∞)=a/c, and if c=0c=0c=0 then Mg(∞)=∞M_g(\infty)=\inftyMg(∞)=∞. For γ∈C\gamma\in\mathbb Cγ∈C let sγ:C^→C^s_\gamma:\widehat{\mathbb C}\to\widehat{\mathbb C}sγ:C→C be the map with sγ(0)=∞s_\gamma(0)=\inftysγ(0)=∞, sγ(∞)=0s_\gamma(\infty)=0sγ(∞)=0 and sγ(z)=γ/zs_\gamma(z)=\gamma/zsγ(z)=γ/z for z∈C∖{0}z\in\mathbb C\setminus\{0\}z∈C∖{0}.

Suppose that a=0a=0a=0 and d=0d=0d=0. Then:

  1. b/c≠0b/c\ne0b/c=0;
  2. MgM_gMg agrees with sb/cs_{b/c}sb/c at every point of the sphere:
Mg(p)=sb/c(p)for all p∈C^.M_g(p)=s_{b/c}(p)\qquad\text{for all }p\in\widehat{\mathbb C}.Mg(p)=sb/c(p)for all p∈C.

Theorem 2 of the note lists the ambient symmetries of C^m,α\widehat C_{m,\alpha}Cm,α as maps z↦λzz\mapsto\lambda zz↦λz and z↦λ/zz\mapsto\lambda/zz↦λ/z with constant λ\lambdaλ, equation (3). This lemma identifies the Möbius maps with antidiagonal matrices with maps of the second kind, including their values at 000 and ∞\infty∞; the formalization uses it to bring Möbius maps that exchange 000 and ∞\infty∞ into this form.

Formalization Note: C^\widehat{\mathbb C}C is OnePoint ℂ and MgM_gMg is Mathlib's action of GL (Fin 2) ℂ on it; a,b,c,da,b,c,da,b,c,d are the entries g 0 0, g 0 1, g 1 0, g 1 1.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
