Let be a Hermitian matrix, jump operators with rates , and the Liouvillian of Eq. (2). Fix a real number and let be the dark space (vectors annihilated by every and with -eigenvalue ). Then:
- for every ,
- every density matrix whose range is contained in is a stationary state: , and .
These are the stationary states the paper calls dark states; Theorem 2 gives a condition under which there are no others.
Formalization Note The page's is taken with one fixed eigenvalue of (the page assumes on p. 3 that is a subspace, i.e. all dark states share one eigenvalue). Part 1 holds for every , hence for every dark vector. Rates are assumed throughout the mission (the page allows on p. 1); is unnormalized.
