Let n≥1n \ge 1n≥1, let FFF be an orthogonal n×nn\times nn×n seed matrix with η=max⁡i,j∣Fij∣2\eta = \max_{i,j}|F_{ij}|^2η=maxi,j∣Fij∣2, and let A∈Rn×nA \in \mathbb{R}^{n\times n}A∈Rn×n be symmetric positive semi-definite. Let 0<ϵ0 < \epsilon0<ϵ and 0<δ<10 < \delta < 10<δ<1. If the number of samples M≥1M \ge 1M≥1 satisfies

M≥2n2η2ϵ−2ln⁡(4/δ)ln⁡2(4n2/δ),M \ge 2n^2\eta^2\epsilon^{-2}\ln(4/\delta)\ln^2(4n^2/\delta),M≥2n2η2ϵ−2ln(4/δ)ln2(4n2/δ),

then the mixed unit vector estimator

TM=nM∑i=1MziTFAFTziT_M = \frac{n}{M}\sum_{i=1}^{M} z_i^T \mathcal F A \mathcal F^T z_iTM=Mni=1∑MziTFAFTzi

is an (ϵ,δ)(\epsilon,\delta)(ϵ,δ)-approximator of trace(A)\mathrm{trace}(A)trace(A):

Pr⁡(∣TM−trace(A)∣≤ϵ trace(A))≥1−δ.\Pr\bigl(|T_M - \mathrm{trace}(A)| \le \epsilon\,\mathrm{trace}(A)\bigr) \ge 1-\delta .Pr(∣TM−trace(A)∣≤ϵtrace(A))≥1−δ.

Here F=FD\mathcal F = FDF=FD with DDD diagonal with i.i.d. Rademacher entries, and z1,…,zMz_1,\ldots,z_Mz1,…,zM are independent uniform samples from {e1,…,en}\{e_1,\ldots,e_n\}{e1,…,en}, independent of DDD. For Fourier-type seeds, where η=Θ(1/n)\eta = \Theta(1/n)η=Θ(1/n), the bound is O(ϵ−2ln⁡(1/δ)ln⁡2(n/δ))O(\epsilon^{-2}\ln(1/\delta)\ln^2(n/\delta))O(ϵ−2ln(1/δ)ln2(n/δ)) samples independently of AAA, each sample requiring only ⌈log⁡2n⌉\lceil\log_2 n\rceil⌈log2n⌉ random bits (plus the nnn bits of DDD).

Formalization Note The probability is over the product space of the diagonal ddd of DDD and the indices of the ziz_izi (mixedSampleMeasure n M). The constant is the one printed in Theorem 8.4, which the proof establishes. The paper's Table I (p. 8:5) lists 8ϵ−2ln⁡(4n2/δ)ln⁡(4/δ)8\epsilon^{-2}\ln(4n^2/\delta)\ln(4/\delta)8ϵ−2ln(4n2/δ)ln(4/δ) for this estimator, which drops the square on ln⁡(4n2/δ)\ln(4n^2/\delta)ln(4n2/δ) and presumes a specific seed; that entry is not what is stated here.

/-- Theorem 8.4 (Avron–Toledo, p. 8:13): let `F` be an orthogonal `n × n` seed matrix (`n ≥ 1`)
with `η = max |F_ij|²`, `A` a symmetric positive semi-definite `n × n` matrix, `0 < ε`,
`0 < δ < 1`, and `M ≥ 1` with `M ≥ 2 n² η² ε⁻² ln(4/δ) ln²(4n²/δ)`. Then the mixed unit vector
estimator `T_M = (n/M) ∑_{i=1}^M z_iᵀ 𝓕 A 𝓕ᵀ z_i` — with `𝓕 = F D`, `D` a diagonal matrix of
i.i.d. Rademacher signs, and `z_1, …, z_M` independent uniform samples from `{e_1, …, e_n}`
drawn independently of `D` — is an `(ε, δ)`-approximator of `trace(A)`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
