Wiles, p. 2: "A conjecture going back to Hasse (see the commentary on 1952(d) in [26]) predicted that L(C,s)L(C,s)L(C,s) should have a holomorphic continuation as a function of sss to the whole complex plane. This has now been proved ([25], [24], [1])."

Let EEE be an elliptic curve over Q\mathbb{Q}Q (Weierstrass equation with rational coefficients, Δ≠0\Delta \ne 0Δ=0). Then there is an entire function Λ:C→C\Lambda : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}Λ:C→C, complex-differentiable at every point, such that

Λ(s)=L(E,s)=∑n≥1annsfor all s with Re⁡s>3/2,\Lambda(s) = L(E,s) = \sum_{n\ge 1} \frac{a_n}{n^s} \qquad \text{for all } s \text{ with } \operatorname{Re} s > 3/2,Λ(s)=L(E,s)=n≥1∑nsanfor all s with Res>3/2,

where L(E,s)L(E,s)L(E,s) is the Hasse–Weil L-series (Euler product over all primes, local factors as in the definition bundle). In the terminology of the mission, EEE has an L-function.

The statement is Hasse's conjecture. It is a consequence of the modularity theorem: every elliptic curve over Q\mathbb{Q}Q of conductor NNN is attached to a weight-two newform fff of level NNN with L(E,s)=L(f,s)L(E,s) = L(f,s)L(E,s)=L(f,s), and L(f,s)L(f,s)L(f,s) continues to an entire function by Hecke's theory (Mellin transform of fff). Modularity was proved for semistable curves by Wiles and Taylor–Wiles (1995) and in general by Breuil, Conrad, Diamond and Taylor (2001). Without this theorem the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture could not even be stated, since s=1s = 1s=1 lies outside the half-plane of convergence of the series.

Formalization Note The conclusion is ∃ Λ, BSD.IsLFunction W Λ: entireness is Differentiable ℂ Λ, and agreement is with Mathlib's WeierstrassCurve.LSeries at every sss with 3/2<Re⁡s3/2 < \operatorname{Re} s3/2<Res. Nothing is asserted about a functional equation or about the behaviour of Λ\LambdaΛ elsewhere. The platform's development of Fermat's Last Theorem contains modularity of semistable integral models (WeierstrassCurve.modularity_of_semistableModel) for a notion of modularity defined through eigenform coefficients; connecting that notion to Mathlib's WeierstrassCurve.LSeries would yield this statement for semistable curves.

Binders and hypotheses. The statement quantifies over a single object WWW, a Weierstrass curve over Q\mathbb{Q}Q: literally a tuple of five rational numbers (a1,a2,a3,a4,a6)(a_1, a_2, a_3, a_4, a_6)(a1,a2,a3,a4,a6), thought of as the coefficients of the equation y2+a1xy+a3y=x3+a2x2+a4x+a6y^2 + a_1 xy + a_3 y = x^3 + a_2 x^2 + a_4 x + a_6y2+a1xy+a3y=x3+a2x2+a4x+a6. There is one typeclass hypothesis, that WWW is elliptic, which unfolds to: the discriminant Δ(W)\Delta(W)Δ(W) is a unit of Q\mathbb{Q}Q, i.e. Δ(W)≠0\Delta(W) \ne 0Δ(W)=0, where

Δ=−b22b8−8b43−27b62+9b2b4b6,\Delta = -b_2^2 b_8 - 8 b_4^3 - 27 b_6^2 + 9 b_2 b_4 b_6,Δ=−b22b8−8b43−27b62+9b2b4b6,

with b2=a12+4a2b_2 = a_1^2 + 4a_2b2=a12+4a2, b4=2a4+a1a3b_4 = 2a_4 + a_1 a_3b4=2a4+a1a3, b6=a32+4a6b_6 = a_3^2 + 4a_6b6=a32+4a6, b8=a12a6+4a2a6−a1a3a4+a2a32−a42b_8 = a_1^2 a_6 + 4a_2 a_6 - a_1 a_3 a_4 + a_2 a_3^2 - a_4^2b8=a12a6+4a2a6−a1a3a4+a2a32−a42. No other hypothesis is imposed on WWW (no integrality, no global minimality, no conductor condition).

The claim. For every such WWW, there exists (not "exists uniquely") a function Λ:C→C\Lambda : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}Λ:C→C satisfying the two-part predicate "Λ\LambdaΛ is an L-function for WWW" from the definition bundle, namely:

  1. (differentiable) Λ\LambdaΛ is complex-differentiable at every point z∈Cz \in \mathbb{C}z∈C: for each zzz there is a C\mathbb{C}C-linear map ℓz:C→C\ell_z : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}ℓz:C→C with Λ(z+h)=Λ(z)+ℓz(h)+o(h)\Lambda(z + h) = \Lambda(z) + \ell_z(h) + o(h)Λ(z+h)=Λ(z)+ℓz(h)+o(h) as h→0h \to 0h→0. In other words Λ\LambdaΛ is an entire function on all of C\mathbb{C}C.

  2. (agreement on a half-plane) for every s∈Cs \in \mathbb{C}s∈C with Re⁡(s)>32\operatorname{Re}(s) > \tfrac{3}{2}Re(s)>23 (strict inequality),

Λ(s)=LW(s),\Lambda(s) = L_W(s),Λ(s)=LW(s),

where LW(s)L_W(s)LW(s) is the specific complex number defined below (Mathlib's WeierstrassCurve.LSeries of WWW at sss).

Nothing in the statement constrains the values of Λ\LambdaΛ at points with Re⁡(s)≤32\operatorname{Re}(s) \le \tfrac32Re(s)≤23 other than condition 1. No functional equation, no growth condition, no relation to any other analytic object, and no non-vanishing or non-triviality of Λ\LambdaΛ is asserted.

Unfolding LW(s)L_W(s)LW(s). Write c:N→Zc : \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{Z}c:N→Z for the integer-valued "arithmetic function" c=LFunction(W)c = \mathrm{LFunction}(W)c=LFunction(W) described below (an arithmetic function is a function on N={0,1,2,… }\mathbb{N} = \{0,1,2,\dots\}N={0,1,2,…} with c(0)=0c(0) = 0c(0)=0). Then

LW(s)  =  ∑n=0∞′ tn(s),tn(s)={0n=0,c(n)nsn≥1,L_W(s) \;=\; {\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}}' \ t_n(s), \qquad t_n(s) = \begin{cases} 0 & n = 0,\\[2pt] \dfrac{c(n)}{n^{s}} & n \ge 1,\end{cases}LW(s)=n=0∑∞′ tn(s),tn(s)=⎩⎨⎧0nsc(n)n=0,n≥1,

where nsn^sns is the principal complex power and c(n)c(n)c(n) is cast from Z\mathbb{Z}Z into C\mathbb{C}C. The primed sum ∑′\sum'∑′ is Mathlib's total "tsum": if the family (tn(s))n(t_n(s))_n(tn(s))n is (unconditionally, equivalently absolutely) summable, it is the sum; if the family is not summable at sss, the value is 000 by definition. Consequently, at any sss with Re⁡(s)>32\operatorname{Re}(s) > \frac32Re(s)>23 where the Dirichlet series ∑c(n)n−s\sum c(n) n^{-s}∑c(n)n−s fails to converge absolutely, condition 2 reads Λ(s)=0\Lambda(s) = 0Λ(s)=0; if the series were not summable anywhere on that half-plane, condition 2 would read "Λ\LambdaΛ vanishes identically on {Re⁡s>32}\{\operatorname{Re} s > \frac32\}{Res>23}", and the constant function Λ≡0\Lambda \equiv 0Λ≡0 would satisfy both conditions. The statement does not assert summability at any point.

Unfolding the coefficients c=LFunction(W)c = \mathrm{LFunction}(W)c=LFunction(W). Let OQ\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{Q}}OQ be the ring of integers of the number field Q\mathbb{Q}Q (isomorphic to Z\mathbb{Z}Z), and let p\mathfrak{p}p range over its height-one spectrum: the nonzero prime ideals, i.e. (up to this isomorphism) the prime numbers ppp. For each such p\mathfrak{p}p let KpK_\mathfrak{p}Kp be the p\mathfrak{p}p-adic completion of Q\mathbb{Q}Q (so Qp\mathbb{Q}_pQp), Rp⊂KpR_\mathfrak{p} \subset K_\mathfrak{p}Rp⊂Kp its valuation ring (so Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp), and κp=Rp/m\kappa_\mathfrak{p} = R_\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{m}κp=Rp/m its residue field (so Fp\mathbb{F}_pFp). Then

c  =  ∏p′ Ep,c \;=\; {\prod_{\mathfrak{p}}}' \ E_\mathfrak{p},c=p∏′ Ep,

an infinite product of arithmetic functions under Dirichlet convolution, taken as a "tprod" in the topology of coefficientwise eventual equality (each coefficient of a finite partial product must stabilise). If the family (Ep)(E_\mathfrak{p})(Ep) is not multipliable in that sense, the product is by definition the multiplicative identity, the arithmetic function ε\varepsilonε with ε(1)=1\varepsilon(1) = 1ε(1)=1 and ε(n)=0\varepsilon(n) = 0ε(n)=0 for n≠1n \ne 1n=1; in that junk case LW(s)=1L_W(s) = 1LW(s)=1 for every sss, and Λ≡1\Lambda \equiv 1Λ≡1 would satisfy the theorem. The statement does not assert multipliability.

The local factor EpE_\mathfrak{p}Ep. Let WpW_\mathfrak{p}Wp be WWW with coefficients mapped into KpK_\mathfrak{p}Kp. Let Wp′=Cp⋅WpW'_\mathfrak{p} = C_\mathfrak{p} \cdot W_\mathfrak{p}Wp′=Cp⋅Wp be a minimal model: CpC_\mathfrak{p}Cp is a change of variables over KpK_\mathfrak{p}Kp, chosen (by the axiom of choice, from a proof that one exists) such that Cp⋅WpC_\mathfrak{p}\cdot W_\mathfrak{p}Cp⋅Wp is integral (its five coefficients lie in RpR_\mathfrak{p}Rp) and, among all changes of variables C′C'C′ with C′⋅WpC' \cdot W_\mathfrak{p}C′⋅Wp integral, the multiplicative valuation v(Δ(C′⋅Wp))∈{1,π,π2,… }∪{0}v(\Delta(C'\cdot W_\mathfrak{p})) \in \{1, \pi, \pi^2,\dots\}\cup\{0\}v(Δ(C′⋅Wp))∈{1,π,π2,…}∪{0} is maximal at C′=CpC' = C_\mathfrak{p}C′=Cp (maximal in the sense: any competitor whose value is ≥\ge≥ has value ≤\le≤). Multiplicative valuation "=1= 1=1" means "a unit"; "<1< 1<1" means "in the maximal ideal". Let IpI_\mathfrak{p}Ip be a chosen integral model of Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ over RpR_\mathfrak{p}Rp (five elements of RpR_\mathfrak{p}Rp mapping to the coefficients of Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′), and let W~p\widetilde{W}_\mathfrak{p}Wp be its reduction: IpI_\mathfrak{p}Ip with coefficients reduced modulo m\mathfrak{m}m into κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp.

Set

qp=#κp∈Z,ap=qp+1−# W~p(κp)∈Z,q_\mathfrak{p} = \#\kappa_\mathfrak{p} \in \mathbb{Z}, \qquad a_\mathfrak{p} = q_\mathfrak{p} + 1 - \#\,\widetilde{W}_\mathfrak{p}(\kappa_\mathfrak{p}) \in \mathbb{Z},qp=#κp∈Z,ap=qp+1−#Wp(κp)∈Z,

where both cardinalities are Nat.card (which returns the junk value 000 for an infinite type; here κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp is finite), the subtraction is in Z\mathbb{Z}Z (no truncation), and W~p(κp)\widetilde{W}_\mathfrak{p}(\kappa_\mathfrak{p})Wp(κp) is the type of affine points of W~p\widetilde W_\mathfrak{p}Wp: one point at infinity together with all pairs (x,y)∈κp2(x, y) \in \kappa_\mathfrak{p}^2(x,y)∈κp2 that are nonsingular on W~p\widetilde W_\mathfrak{p}Wp, meaning y2+a1xy+a3y−(x3+a2x2+a4x+a6)=0y^2 + a_1xy + a_3y - (x^3 + a_2x^2 + a_4x + a_6) = 0y2+a1xy+a3y−(x3+a2x2+a4x+a6)=0 and at least one of the two partial derivatives of this expression is nonzero at (x,y)(x,y)(x,y) (coefficients those of W~p\widetilde W_\mathfrak{p}Wp). Singular points of the reduced curve, if any, are not counted.

The local polynomial fp(T)∈Z[T]f_\mathfrak{p}(T) \in \mathbb{Z}[T]fp(T)∈Z[T] is chosen by a cascade of four cases on Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′:

  • if Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ has good reduction (Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ minimal as above and v(Δ(Wp′))=1v(\Delta(W'_\mathfrak{p})) = 1v(Δ(Wp′))=1), then fp=1−apT+qpT2f_\mathfrak{p} = 1 - a_\mathfrak{p} T + q_\mathfrak{p} T^2fp=1−apT+qpT2;
  • otherwise, if Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ has split multiplicative reduction (minimal, v(Δ(Wp′))<1v(\Delta(W'_\mathfrak{p})) < 1v(Δ(Wp′))<1, v(c4(Wp′))=1v(c_4(W'_\mathfrak{p})) = 1v(c4(Wp′))=1 where c4=b22−24b4c_4 = b_2^2 - 24 b_4c4=b22−24b4, and the polynomial c4T2+a1c4T−(54b6−3b2b4+a2c4)c_4 T^2 + a_1 c_4 T - (54 b_6 - 3 b_2 b_4 + a_2 c_4)c4T2+a1c4T−(54b6−3b2b4+a2c4), with coefficients taken from IpI_\mathfrak{p}Ip and reduced into κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp, is a product of constants and monic linear factors over κp\kappa_\mathfrak{p}κp), then fp=1−Tf_\mathfrak{p} = 1 - Tfp=1−T;
  • otherwise, if Wp′W'_\mathfrak{p}Wp′ has multiplicative reduction (minimal, v(Δ(Wp′))<1v(\Delta(W'_\mathfrak{p})) < 1v(Δ(Wp′))<1, v(c4(Wp′))=1v(c_4(W'_\mathfrak{p})) = 1v(c4(Wp′))=1) — i.e. non-split multiplicative — then fp=1+Tf_\mathfrak{p} = 1 + Tfp=1+T;
  • otherwise (which, for a minimal model, is the case v(Δ)<1v(\Delta) < 1v(Δ)<1 and v(c4)<1v(c_4) < 1v(c4)<1, "additive reduction"), fp=1f_\mathfrak{p} = 1fp=1.

In every branch fpf_\mathfrak{p}fp has constant term 111. Let gp(T)=∑kgp,kTk∈Z[[T]]g_\mathfrak{p}(T) = \sum_k g_{\mathfrak{p},k} T^k \in \mathbb{Z}[[T]]gp(T)=∑kgp,kTk∈Z[[T]] be the formal power series obtained from fpf_\mathfrak{p}fp by Mathlib's inverse-of-a-unit recursion with the unit 111 (namely gp,0=1g_{\mathfrak{p},0} = 1gp,0=1 and gp,k=−∑i=1kfp,i gp,k−ig_{\mathfrak{p},k} = -\sum_{i=1}^{k} f_{\mathfrak{p},i}\, g_{\mathfrak{p},k-i}gp,k=−∑i=1kfp,igp,k−i for k≥1k \ge 1k≥1), so that fp gp=1f_\mathfrak{p}\, g_\mathfrak{p} = 1fpgp=1 as formal power series. Finally EpE_\mathfrak{p}Ep is the arithmetic function "gp(qp−s)g_\mathfrak{p}(q_\mathfrak{p}^{-s})gp(qp−s)": when qp>1q_\mathfrak{p} > 1qp>1,

Ep(n)={gp,kif n=qp k for some k≥0,0if n is not a power of qp,E_\mathfrak{p}(n) = \begin{cases} g_{\mathfrak{p},k} & \text{if } n = q_\mathfrak{p}^{\,k} \text{ for some } k \ge 0,\\ 0 & \text{if } n \text{ is not a power of } q_\mathfrak{p}, \end{cases}Ep(n)={gp,k0if n=qpk for some k≥0,if n is not a power of qp,

and when qp≤1q_\mathfrak{p} \le 1qp≤1 (junk case, not occurring for finite residue fields of size ≥2\ge 2≥2) EpE_\mathfrak{p}Ep is instead the constant term gp,0g_{\mathfrak{p},0}gp,0 placed at n=1n = 1n=1 and 000 elsewhere.

Items in the bundle not used by this statement. The definition rank⁡(W)=dim⁡Z\operatorname{rank}(W) = \dim_{\mathbb{Z}}rank(W)=dimZ-finrank of the affine point group of WWW over Q\mathbb{Q}Q (the natural number obtained from the Z\mathbb{Z}Z-module rank, junk 000 if infinite) appears in the bundle but does not occur in this theorem.

Summary of what is asserted. For every five-tuple of rationals WWW with Δ(W)≠0\Delta(W) \ne 0Δ(W)=0, there is at least one entire function Λ:C→C\Lambda : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}Λ:C→C whose values on the open half-plane Re⁡(s)>32\operatorname{Re}(s) > \frac32Re(s)>23 coincide, point by point, with the total-function value LW(s)L_W(s)LW(s) of the Dirichlet series ∑n≥1c(n)n−s\sum_{n \ge 1} c(n) n^{-s}∑n≥1c(n)n−s built from the Euler product of the local factors above (with the value 000 wherever that series is not absolutely summable, and with c=εc = \varepsilonc=ε if the Euler product is not multipliable).
