Let Ai,Bi,Ci>0A_i, B_i, C_i > 0Ai,Bi,Ci>0 with n≥1n \ge 1n≥1, and suppose every AiA_iAi is at least every BjB_jBj, i.e. min⁡iAi≥max⁡jBj\min_i A_i \ge \max_j B_jminiAi≥maxjBj. Then for every ordering σ\sigmaσ and every position vvv,

max⁡u≤vKu=Kv,\max_{u \le v} K_u = K_v ,u≤vmaxKu=Kv,

and consequently the total elapsed time of the as-soon-as-possible schedule of σ\sigmaσ is

makespan⁡=∑i=1nCi+max⁡1≤v≤n(Hv+Kv).\operatorname{makespan} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} C_i + \max_{1 \le v \le n} \bigl(H_v + K_v\bigr).makespan=i=1∑nCi+1≤v≤nmax(Hv+Kv).

In this case the objective depends only on the "diagonal" terms Gv=Hv+KvG_v = H_v + K_vGv=Hv+Kv, which is what makes an interchange argument on adjacent items local.

Formalization Note The hypothesis is the global one, Bj≤AiB_j \le A_iBj≤Ai for all i,ji, ji,j, as in the section heading "MIN Ai≥A_i \geAi≥ MAX BjB_jBj"; the pointwise reading Bi≤AiB_i \le A_iBi≤Ai is weaker and does not suffice. Positions are 0-based.

/-- p. 67, special case where `min A_i ≥ max B_j`: if every `A_i` is at least every `B_j`, then
for every order `σ` and every position `v`, `max_{u ≤ v} K_u = K_v`; consequently the total
elapsed time of the as-soon-as-possible schedule of `σ` is `∑_i C_i + max_v (H_v + K_v)`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
