This is a technical supporting-hyperplane lemma for a convex function.

Let EEE be a real inner-product normed additive group, let u:E→Ru:E\to\mathbb Ru:E→R be convex on all of EEE, and let Ω⊆E\Omega\subseteq EΩ⊆E be open. For x0,x1,p∈Ex_0,x_1,p\in Ex0,x1,p∈E and c∈Rc\in\mathbb Rc∈R, assume x1∈Ωx_1\in\Omegax1∈Ω and that x1x_1x1 maximizes

z↦c+⟨p,z−x0⟩−u(z)z\mapsto c+\langle p,z-x_0\rangle-u(z)z↦c+⟨p,z−x0⟩−u(z)

on over Ω‾\overline\OmegaΩ. Then, for every y∈Ey\in Ey∈E,

u(x1)+⟨p,y−x1⟩≤u(y).u(x_1)+\langle p,y-x_1\rangle\le u(y).u(x1)+⟨p,y−x1⟩≤u(y).

The result identifies ppp as a subgradient of uuu at x1x_1x1, using the inline subgradient formulation rather than a separate subdifferential object. It is used to convert a maximizer of an affine perturbation into a global supporting inequality.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
