Let TTT be the Syracuse map, sending nnn to the odd part of 3n+13n+13n+1. This is the threshold-parametrised form of the margin criterion for excluding Syracuse cycles of a fixed period.

Fix a period a≥1a \ge 1a≥1 and a threshold B≥1B \ge 1B≥1, and suppose two things are known about BBB:

  • (small values) every periodic point below BBB is 111; equivalently, no nontrivial cycle contains a value <B< B<B;
  • (margin) every power of two exceeding 3a3^a3a also exceeds ((3B+1)/B)a\bigl((3B+1)/B\bigr)^a((3B+1)/B)a, i.e. (3B+1)a<2KBa(3B+1)^a < 2^K B^a(3B+1)a<2KBa whenever 3a<2K3^a < 2^K3a<2K.

Then every aaa-periodic point of TTT equals 111.

The mechanism is a comparison of two inequalities holding around any cycle. Writing m0m_0m0 for the cycle minimum and K=∑i<av2(3Ti(m0)+1)K = \sum_{i<a} v_2\bigl(3T^i(m_0)+1\bigr)K=∑i<av2(3Ti(m0)+1) for the total number of halvings, one has 3a<2K3^a < 2^K3a<2K and 2Km0 a≤(3m0+1)a2^K m_0^{\,a} \le (3m_0+1)^a2Km0a≤(3m0+1)a. A nontrivial cycle has m0≥Bm_0 \ge Bm0≥B by the first assumption, which gives the linear estimate B(3m0+1)≤(3B+1)m0B(3m_0+1) \le (3B+1)m_0B(3m0+1)≤(3B+1)m0; raised to the aaa-th power this contradicts the margin assumption.

Separating the threshold BBB from the argument is what makes the criterion usable: improving the verified range of small values immediately widens the set of periods that can be excluded, with no change to the proof. With B=34B = 34B=34 the margin condition holds exactly for a≤16a \le 16a≤16; with B=1193B = 1193B=1193 it holds exactly for a≤93a \le 93a≤93. It never holds for all aaa, since 2K/3a2^K/3^a2K/3a returns arbitrarily close to 111 along the convergents of log⁡23\log_2 3log23.
