Let X,YX,YX,Y be nonempty closed convex feasible sets in two real normed spaces. Let f:X×Y→Rf:X\times Y\to\mathbb Rf:X×Y→R be convex in its first argument, concave in its second, and smooth as in (15.7)–(15.10) with nonnegative constants LXX,LXY,LYYL_{XX},L_{XY},L_{YY}LXX,LXY,LYY. Run Algorithm 15.6 with λX\lambda_XλX-strongly convex regularizer ψX\psi_XψX and λY\lambda_YλY-strongly convex regularizer ψY\psi_YψY. Assume α,λX,λY>0\alpha,\lambda_X,\lambda_Y>0α,λX,λY>0 and

λX≥22(LXX+LXYα),λY≥22(LYY+LXY/α).\lambda_X\ge2\sqrt2(L_{XX}+L_{XY}\alpha),\qquad \lambda_Y\ge2\sqrt2(L_{YY}+L_{XY}/\alpha).λX≥22(LXX+LXYα),λY≥22(LYY+LXY/α).

For T≥1T\ge1T≥1, let xT′x_T'xT′ minimize f(⋅,yˉT)f(\cdot,\bar y_T)f(⋅,yˉT) over XXX and let yT′y_T'yT′ maximize f(xˉT,⋅)f(\bar x_T,\cdot)f(xˉT,⋅) over YYY. Then

f(xˉT,yT′)−f(xT′,yˉT)≤ψX(xT′)−ψX(x1)+ψY(yT′)−ψY(y1)+∥gX,1∥X,∗2/λX+∥gY,1∥Y,∗2/λYT.f(\bar x_T,y_T')-f(x_T',\bar y_T)\le \frac{\psi_X(x_T')-\psi_X(x_1)+\psi_Y(y_T')-\psi_Y(y_1)+\|g_{X,1}\|_{X,*}^2/\lambda_X+\|g_{Y,1}\|_{Y,*}^2/\lambda_Y}{T}.f(xˉT,yT′)−f(xT′,yˉT)≤TψX(xT′)−ψX(x1)+ψY(yT′)−ψY(y1)+∥gX,1∥X,∗2/λX+∥gY,1∥Y,∗2/λY.

The result gives the printed convergence certificate for the averages of optimistic FTRL self-play.

Formalization Note Gradients are continuous linear functionals on the ambient normed spaces, and their operator norms are the dual norms. The partial derivatives are supplied on an open neighborhood of X×YX\times YX×Y. The two attained extrema are given as arbitrary witnesses. Positivity of TTT and the regularizer parameters rules out division by zero. The smoothness constants are explicitly nonnegative, as implicit in their use as Lipschitz constants. The run predicate enforces both argmin updates and the initial zero hints.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
