Let h:Rn→Rh : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}h:Rn→R be twice continuously differentiable with bounded Hessian, P:Rm→(−∞,+∞]P : \mathbb{R}^m \to (-\infty, +\infty]P:Rm→(−∞,+∞] proper and lower semicontinuous, ϕ:Rn→R\phi : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}ϕ:Rn→R twice continuously differentiable and convex, M:Rn→Rm\mathcal M : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^mM:Rn→Rm linear with adjoint M∗\mathcal M^*M∗, and β>0\beta > 0β>0. Let (xt,yt,zt)t≥0(x^t, y^t, z^t)_{t \ge 0}(xt,yt,zt)t≥0 be a sequence generated by the proximal ADMM with penalty β\betaβ and proximal function ϕ\phiϕ (initial points x0,z0x^0, z^0x0,z0 arbitrary, y0y^0y0 unconstrained). Suppose Assumption 1 holds with witnesses σ,δ,γ\sigma, \delta, \gammaσ,δ,γ and Q1,Q2,T1,T2,Q3\mathcal Q_1, \mathcal Q_2, \mathcal T_1, \mathcal T_2, \mathcal Q_3Q1,Q2,T1,T2,Q3. For a self-map T\mathcal TT write ∥x∥T2:=⟨x,Tx⟩\|x\|^2_{\mathcal T} := \langle x, \mathcal T x\rangle∥x∥T2:=⟨x,Tx⟩. Suppose moreover that condition (29) holds with the same σ\sigmaσ and γ\gammaγ: there are ζ\zetaζ with 0<ζ<2βγ0 < \zeta < 2\beta\gamma0<ζ<2βγ and h0∈Rh_0 \in \mathbb{R}h0∈R such that

h(x)−1σζ∥∇h(x)∥2≥h0for all x.h(x) - \frac{1}{\sigma\zeta}\|\nabla h(x)\|^2 \ge h_0 \qquad \text{for all } x .h(x)−σζ1∥∇h(x)∥2≥h0for all x.

Let μ∈(0,1)\mu \in (0, 1)μ∈(0,1) satisfy (1−μ)β>ζ/(2γ)(1-\mu)\beta > \zeta/(2\gamma)(1−μ)β>ζ/(2γ), and set c:=1−μζ−12βγc := \frac{1-\mu}{\zeta} - \frac{1}{2\beta\gamma}c:=ζ1−μ−2βγ1 (so c>0c > 0c>0).

Then for every t≥1t \ge 1t≥1,

Lβ(x1,y1,z1)+12∥x1−x0∥2σβ(1−γ)T122≥μh(xt)+(1−μ)h0+cσ∥∇h(xt)∥2+P(yt)+β2∥Mxt−yt−ztβ∥2+12∥xt−xt−1∥1σβ(1−γ)T122.L_\beta(x^1, y^1, z^1) + \frac12\|x^1 - x^0\|^2_{\frac{2}{\sigma\beta(1-\gamma)}\mathcal T_1^2} \ge \mu h(x^t) + (1-\mu)h_0 + \frac{c}{\sigma}\|\nabla h(x^t)\|^2 + P(y^t) + \frac{\beta}{2}\Bigl\|\mathcal M x^t - y^t - \frac{z^t}{\beta}\Bigr\|^2 + \frac12\|x^t - x^{t-1}\|^2_{\frac{1}{\sigma\beta(1-\gamma)}\mathcal T_1^2}.Lβ(x1,y1,z1)+21∥x1−x0∥σβ(1−γ)2T122≥μh(xt)+(1−μ)h0+σc∥∇h(xt)∥2+P(yt)+2βMxt−yt−βzt2+21∥xt−xt−1∥σβ(1−γ)1T122.

Every term on the right is controlled by the constant on the left; under either set of coercivity hypotheses of Theorem 2 this yields bounds on the iterates.

Formalization Note The paper defines h0h_0h0 as the infimum inf⁡x{h(x)−1σζ∥∇h(x)∥2}\inf_x\{h(x) - \frac{1}{\sigma\zeta}\|\nabla h(x)\|^2\}infx{h(x)−σζ1∥∇h(x)∥2} and requires it to be >−∞> -\infty>−∞; here h0h_0h0 is any real lower bound. The infimum is finite exactly when a real lower bound exists, and the proof uses h0h_0h0 only as a lower bound, so the two readings give the same result. The augmented Lagrangian LβL_\betaLβ takes values in (−∞,+∞](-\infty, +\infty](−∞,+∞], so the inequality is stated in EReal in additive form (the real terms moved to the side where they are added), which avoids extended-real subtraction. The quantity zt/βz^t/\betazt/β is written (1/β) zt(1/\beta)\,z^t(1/β)zt.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
