Let q∈Δnq\in\Delta_nq∈Δn with q(j)>0q(j)>0q(j)>0 for all jjj, let β>0\beta>0β>0 and v∈Rnv\in\mathbb R^nv∈Rn, and let σ\sigmaσ be the dual function (47). Then

σ(λ)=qTv+βλ+o(1)(λ→∞),\sigma(\lambda)=q^{\mathsf T}v+\beta\lambda+o(1)\qquad(\lambda\to\infty),σ(λ)=qTv+βλ+o(1)(λ→∞),

that is, σ(λ)−(qTv+βλ)→0\sigma(\lambda)-(q^{\mathsf T}v+\beta\lambda)\to 0σ(λ)−(qTv+βλ)→0.

Together with the lower bound in (48), this says the affine function qTv+βλq^{\mathsf T}v+\beta\lambdaqTv+βλ is the asymptote of σ\sigmaσ at infinity.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N, let q,v∈Rnq, v \in \mathbb{R}^nq,v∈Rn and let β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}β∈R. Assume:

  • qqq lies in the probability simplex (qj≥0q_j \ge 0qj≥0, ∑jqj=1\sum_j q_j = 1∑jqj=1);
  • qj>0q_j > 0qj>0 for every jjj;
  • β>0\beta > 0β>0.

Notation. The dual function is

σ(λ)=λlog⁡ ⁣(∑jqjevj/λ)+βλ.\sigma(\lambda) = \lambda \log\!\Big(\sum_j q_j e^{v_j/\lambda}\Big) + \beta\lambda .σ(λ)=λlog(j∑qjevj/λ)+βλ.

Conclusion. As λ→+∞\lambda \to +\inftyλ→+∞,

σ(λ)−(∑jqjvj+βλ)  ⟶  0.\sigma(\lambda) - \Big(\sum_j q_j v_j + \beta\lambda\Big) \;\longrightarrow\; 0 .σ(λ)−(j∑qjvj+βλ)⟶0.

Equivalently, σ(λ)=∑jqjvj+βλ+o(1)\sigma(\lambda) = \sum_j q_j v_j + \beta\lambda + o(1)σ(λ)=∑jqjvj+βλ+o(1).

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n = 0n=0: excluded by the simplex hypothesis.
  • n=1n = 1n=1, or vvv constant: the difference is identically 000 for λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0.
  • β\betaβ: it cancels from the difference, so the hypothesis β>0\beta > 0β>0 plays no visible role.
  • Other values of λ\lambdaλ: only the behaviour for large positive λ\lambdaλ is asserted.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
