collision-problemcombinatoricspolynomial-method

Fix a valid collision triple (m,a,b)(m,a,b)(m,a,b) for a domain and alphabet of size nnn: 0≤m≤n0\le m\le n0≤m≤n, a,b≥1a,b\ge1a,b≥1, a∣ma\mid ma∣m, and b∣n−mb\mid n-mb∣n−m. Let E⊆[n]×[n]E\subseteq[n]\times[n]E⊆[n]×[n] be a finite set of input-output constraints, with at most one required output for each input. Write JJJ for its set of output labels, s=∣E∣s=|E|s=∣E∣, t=∣J∣t=|J|t=∣J∣, and cj=∣{i:(i,j)∈E}∣c_j=|\{i:(i,j)\in E\}|cj=∣{i:(i,j)∈E}∣.

For independent uniform permutations σ,τ\sigma,\tauσ,τ of [n][n][n], let δijστ\delta^{\sigma\tau}_{ij}δijστ indicate that τ(xσ(i)m,a,b)=j\tau(x^{m,a,b}_{\sigma(i)})=jτ(xσ(i)m,a,b)=j, where xm,a,bx^{m,a,b}xm,a,b is the specified aaa-to-one/bbb-to-one collision input. With the real falling factorial (z)r=∏q=0r−1(z−q)(z)_r=\prod_{q=0}^{r-1}(z-q)(z)r=∏q=0r−1(z−q), the exact average is

Eσ,τ∏(i,j)∈Eδijστ=1(n)s(n)t∑U⊆J(ma)∣U∣(n−mb)∣J∖U∣∏j∈U(a)cj∏j∈J∖U(b)cj.\mathbb E_{\sigma,\tau}\prod_{(i,j)\in E}\delta^{\sigma\tau}_{ij} =\frac{1}{(n)_s(n)_t}\sum_{U\subseteq J} \left(\frac ma\right)_{|U|} \left(\frac{n-m}{b}\right)_{|J\setminus U|} \prod_{j\in U}(a)_{c_j}\prod_{j\in J\setminus U}(b)_{c_j}.Eσ,τ(i,j)∈E∏δijστ=(n)s(n)t1U⊆J∑(am)∣U∣(bn−m)∣J∖U∣j∈U∏(a)cjj∈J∖U∏(b)cj.

Empty products are one. Consistency implies s,t≤ns,t\le ns,t≤n, so both denominator factors are positive, including the empty case n=0n=0n=0. This is the explicit counting identity used by Kutin's symmetrization lemma; it isolates the combinatorics from the subsequent cancellation and polynomial degree argument.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
