Let m≥0m\ge0m≥0 be an integer and let α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C be arbitrary. For x=(x0,x1)x=(x_0,x_1)x=(x0,x1) and y=(y0,y1)y=(y_0,y_1)y=(y0,y1) in C2\mathbb C^2C2 let

Fα(x,y)=α x0mx1 y1m+1+x0m+1y0 y1m+αˉ x1m+1y0m y1+x0 x1m y0m+1,F_\alpha(x,y)=\alpha\,x_0^m x_1\,y_1^{m+1}+x_0^{m+1}y_0\,y_1^m+\bar\alpha\,x_1^{m+1}y_0^m\,y_1+x_0\,x_1^m\,y_0^{m+1},Fα(x,y)=αx0mx1y1m+1+x0m+1y0y1m+αˉx1m+1y0my1+x0x1my0m+1,

the bihomogenization of Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)P_\alpha(X,Y)=X^m(\alpha+XY)+Y^m(\bar\alpha+XY)Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY), and let Q(u,Y)=αu+Y+αˉ um+1Ym+umYm+1∈C[u,Y]Q(u,Y)=\alpha u+Y+\bar\alpha\,u^{m+1}Y^m+u^mY^{m+1}\in\mathbb C[u,Y]Q(u,Y)=αu+Y+αˉum+1Ym+umYm+1∈C[u,Y]. It satisfies Q(u,Y)=Fα((1,u),(Y,1))Q(u,Y)=F_\alpha\bigl((1,u),(Y,1)\bigr)Q(u,Y)=Fα((1,u),(Y,1)), so QQQ is the equation of Vα={Fα=0}⊂P1×P1V_\alpha=\{F_\alpha=0\}\subset\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1Vα={Fα=0}⊂P1×P1 in the mixed chart of the points ([1:u],[Y:1])([1:u],[Y:1])([1:u],[Y:1]), where X=1/uX=1/uX=1/u.

For all u,Y∈Cu,Y\in\mathbb Cu,Y∈C, the point ((1,u),(Y,1))\bigl((1,u),(Y,1)\bigr)((1,u),(Y,1)) of C2×C2\mathbb C^2\times\mathbb C^2C2×C2 is a critical zero of FαF_\alphaFα, meaning that FαF_\alphaFα vanishes there and is differentiable there with zero differential, if and only if

Q(u,Y)=∂Q∂u(u,Y)=∂Q∂Y(u,Y)=0.Q(u,Y)=\frac{\partial Q}{\partial u}(u,Y)=\frac{\partial Q}{\partial Y}(u,Y)=0.Q(u,Y)=∂u∂Q(u,Y)=∂Y∂Q(u,Y)=0.

In the proof of Lemma 4 the equation of VαV_\alphaVα near the boundary point (∞,0)(\infty,0)(∞,0) is written as um+1Pα(1/u,Y)=Q(u,Y)u^{m+1}P_\alpha(1/u,Y)=Q(u,Y)um+1Pα(1/u,Y)=Q(u,Y). This lemma identifies the homogeneous singularity condition at the points ([1:u],[Y:1])([1:u],[Y:1])([1:u],[Y:1]) with the Jacobian criterion for that chart equation; the formalization uses it to show that the mixed boundary points of VαV_\alphaVα are nonsingular.

Formalization Note: the partial derivatives of QQQ are Mathlib's formal derivatives MvPolynomial.pderiv, and the condition on FαF_\alphaFα uses HasFDerivAt on (Fin 2 → ℂ) × (Fin 2 → ℂ).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
