Let n≥1n\ge1n≥1, let every bidder iii have an XOS valuation viv_ivi with admissible clause set WiW_iWi, and let cli\mathrm{cl}_icli be an XOS oracle for viv_ivi; write p(i,S)=cli(S)p^{(i,S)}=\mathrm{cl}_i(S)p(i,S)=cli(S) for the maximizing clause of SSS in viv_ivi. Let xxx be a feasible solution of the LP relaxation and let (S1,…,Sn)(S_1,\dots,S_n)(S1,…,Sn) be drawn by randomized rounding from xxx. For an item jjj let Qj=max⁡i∈Npj(i,Si)Q_j=\max_{i\in N}p^{(i,S_i)}_jQj=maxi∈Npj(i,Si). Then for every item jjj,

E[Qj] ≥ (1−(1−1n)n)∑i∈N ∑S∋jxi,S pj(i,S).\mathbb E[Q_j]\ \ge\ \Big(1-\Big(1-\frac1n\Big)^n\Big)\sum_{i\in N}\ \sum_{S\ni j}x_{i,S}\,p^{(i,S)}_j .E[Qj] ≥ (1−(1−n1)n)i∈N∑ S∋j∑xi,Spj(i,S).

Summed over the items, the right-hand side is (1−(1−1/n)n) OPT∗(1-(1-1/n)^n)\,\mathrm{OPT}^*(1−(1−1/n)n)OPT∗, which yields the approximation ratio of Theorem 3.2.

Formalization Note The paper's display of Lemma 3.3 prints the sum over all pairs (i,S)(i,S)(i,S). As printed it is false: a maximizing clause assigns values to items outside SSS (two bidders, items a,ba,ba,b, both with the single clause (1,1)(1,1)(1,1), x1,{a}=x2,{b}=1x_{1,\{a\}}=x_{2,\{b\}}=1x1,{a}=x2,{b}=1 give Qa=1<34⋅2Q_a=1<\tfrac34\cdot2Qa=1<43⋅2). The last line of the paper's proof restricts to S∋jS\ni jS∋j, which is what is stated here. Only feasibility of xxx is assumed, not optimality.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
