Let ∇\nabla∇ be any torsion-free derivative operator on R4\mathbb R^4R4 and φ\varphiφ any smooth scalar field. Writing ∇~\widetilde{\nabla}∇ for the Trautman geometrization (∇,−tbtc∇aφ)(\nabla,-t_b t_c\nabla^a\varphi)(∇,−tbtc∇aφ), a unit-timelike curve is a ∇~\widetilde{\nabla}∇-geodesic if and only if it satisfies Newton's law ξn∇nξa=−∇aφ\xi^n\nabla_n\xi^a=-\nabla^a\varphiξn∇nξa=−∇aφ. Equivalently, SameTrajectories(∇,φ,∇~)\mathrm{SameTrajectories}(\nabla,\varphi,\widetilde{\nabla})SameTrajectories(∇,φ,∇) holds.

This is the empirical-content half of Weatherall's Prop. 2.1 / Malament Prop. 4.2.1 (G1), and is reused in the Trautman recovery (Prop. 2.2).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
