Consider the unit commitment problem with budget uncertainty set D=∏tDt\mathcal D=\prod_t\mathcal D^tD=∏tDt of (3), with Γ≥0\Gamma\ge0Γ≥0 and d^jt>0\hat d_j^t>0d^jt>0. Delete the ramping constraints, (1i) in the two-stage robust UC (2) and (5c) in the multistage robust UC (5). Then the two models are equivalent:

  1. at every commitment (x,u,v)∈X(x,u,v)\in X(x,u,v)∈X they have the same objective value,
F(x)+max⁡d∈D min⁡p∈ΩNR(x,d)c(p)  =  F(x)+min⁡p(⋅) max⁡d∈D∑t∈T∑i∈NgCipit(d[t]),F(x)+\max_{d\in\mathcal D}\ \min_{p\in\Omega^{NR}(x,d)}c(p)\;=\;F(x)+\min_{p(\cdot)}\ \max_{d\in\mathcal D}\sum_{t\in\mathcal T}\sum_{i\in\mathcal N_g}C_ip_i^t(d^{[t]}),F(x)+d∈Dmax p∈ΩNR(x,d)minc(p)=F(x)+p(⋅)min d∈Dmaxt∈T∑i∈Ng∑Cipit(d[t]),

where the minimum on the right is over non-anticipative dispatch policies pt(d[t])p^t(d^{[t]})pt(d[t]), depending only on the net loads d1,…,dtd^1,\dots,d^td1,…,dt realized up to period ttt, that satisfy (5b), (5d), (5e) for every d∈Dd\in\mathcal Dd∈D; 2. hence their optimal values over XXX coincide.

The two-stage model lets the dispatch see the whole day's net loads; the multistage model does not. The theorem says that this extra information is worthless when the ramping constraints are absent, so the multistage model differs from the two-stage model only through ramping; Propositions 1 and 2 show that with ramping the two models can differ.

Formalization Note Periods are Fin T with Lean period ttt being the paper's period t+1t+1t+1. Net-load trajectories are d:{0,…,T−1}→RNdd:\{0,\dots,T-1\}\to\mathbb R^{N_d}d:{0,…,T−1}→RNd. Values are extended reals: a minimum over an empty set is +∞+\infty+∞ (an infeasible dispatch problem costs +∞+\infty+∞). The standing assumptions Γ≥0\Gamma\ge 0Γ≥0 and d^jt>0\hat d^t_j>0d^jt>0 of the budget set (3) are carried as hypotheses; they make dˉ∈D\bar d\in\mathcal Ddˉ∈D, so every Dt\mathcal D^tDt is nonempty. "Equivalent" is formalized as equality of the two objectives at every commitment in XXX together with equality of the optimal values; equal objectives on XXX also give the same optimal solutions.

/-- Theorem 1, p. 11: without ramping constraints (5c), the two-stage robust UC (2) and the multistage
robust UC (5) are equivalent: they have the same objective value at every commitment `(x, u, v) ∈ X`,
and hence the same optimal value. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
