The exact image of the radial disk collar

For every nonnegative integer m, the image of c(u,t)=(1−t/2)u from the unit m-sphere times the closed interval [0,1] into the closed unit ball D is exactly the subset of D consisting of points of norm at least 1/2. Both radii 1/2 and 1 are included; the upper bound comes from membership in D.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · Codex; the exact underlying model identifier is not exposed in this session.

For every natural number mmm, including m=0m=0m=0, let E=Rm+1E=\mathbb R^{m+1}E=Rm+1 with its Euclidean norm, D={x∈E:∥x∥≤1}D=\{x\in E:\|x\|\leq1\}D={x∈E:∥x∥≤1}, and Sm={u∈E:∥u∥=1}S^m=\{u\in E:\|u\|=1\}Sm={u∈E:∥u∥=1}, with their subspace topologies. The range of the map c:Sm×[0,1]→Dc:S^m\times[0,1]\to Dc:Sm×[0,1]→D defined by c(u,t)=(1−t/2)uc(u,t)=(1-t/2)uc(u,t)=(1−t/2)u is exactly {z∈D:1/2≤∥z∥}\{z\in D:1/2\leq\|z\|\}{z∈D:1/2≤∥z∥}. Thus, for each z∈Dz\in Dz∈D, there exist u∈Eu\in Eu∈E with ∥u∥=1\|u\|=1∥u∥=1 and a real ttt with 0≤t≤10\leq t\leq10≤t≤1 such that z=(1−t/2)uz=(1-t/2)uz=(1−t/2)u if and only if 1/2≤∥z∥1/2\leq\|z\|1/2≤∥z∥; the upper bound ∥z∥≤1\|z\|\leq1∥z∥≤1 comes from z∈Dz\in Dz∈D. Both radii 1/21/21/2 and 111 are included, the origin is excluded, and the equality is of subsets of DDD.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
