Let f:Rn→Rf:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}f:Rn→R be twice differentiable and μ\muμ-strongly convex with μ>0\mu>0μ>0, with LLL-Lipschitz gradient, and let the damping factor satisfy 0<σ≤μ/L0<\sigma\le\mu/L0<σ≤μ/L. For a point xxx let γ=∥∇f(x)∥2/⟨∇2f(x)∇f(x),∇f(x)⟩\gamma=\|\nabla f(x)\|^2/\langle\nabla^2 f(x)\nabla f(x),\nabla f(x)\rangleγ=∥∇f(x)∥2/⟨∇2f(x)∇f(x),∇f(x)⟩ be the step size of (6.1), and let x+=x−σγ∇f(x)x^+=x-\sigma\gamma\nabla f(x)x+=x−σγ∇f(x) be one step of the damped method. Then

f(x+)≤f(x)−σγ2 ∥∇f(x)∥2.f(x^+)\le f(x)-\frac{\sigma\gamma}{2}\,\|\nabla f(x)\|^2.f(x+)≤f(x)−2σγ∥∇f(x)∥2.

This is the conclusion of the chain (D.2), with x=xjx=x_jx=xj and x+=xj+1x^+=x_{j+1}x+=xj+1. Combined with γ≥1/L\gamma\ge 1/Lγ≥1/L and strong convexity it gives the global linear rate (6.4) of the damped method.

Formalization Note The positivity σ>0\sigma>0σ>0 is not written on the page; it is implicit in calling σγj\sigma\gamma_jσγj a damped step, and is added as a hypothesis. At a stationary point γ=0\gamma=0γ=0 (Lean's 0/0=00/0=00/0=0) and both sides equal f(x)f(x)f(x). Conventions for strong convexity, smoothness and the Hessian form are those of (D.1).

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}n∈N (possibly 000), let f:Rn→Rf:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}f:Rn→R with the Euclidean inner product and norm, and let μ,L,σ\mu, L, \sigmaμ,L,σ be real numbers.

The step size is

γ(x)=∥∇f(x)∥2D2f(x)[∇f(x),∇f(x)],\gamma(x)=\frac{\|\nabla f(x)\|^2}{D^2f(x)[\nabla f(x),\nabla f(x)]},γ(x)=D2f(x)[∇f(x),∇f(x)]∥∇f(x)∥2,

where D2f(x)D^2 f(x)D2f(x) is the second Fréchet derivative of fff at xxx (as a bilinear form), and division by 000 gives 000.

The hypotheses are:

  1. fff is differentiable everywhere, and x↦Df(x)x\mapsto Df(x)x↦Df(x) is differentiable everywhere.
  2. μ>0\mu>0μ>0.
  3. fff is μ\muμ-strongly convex on all of Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn: for all x,yx,yx,y and all a,b≥0a,b\ge0a,b≥0 with a+b=1a+b=1a+b=1,
f(ax+by)≤af(x)+bf(y)−ab μ2∥x−y∥2.f(ax+by)\le af(x)+bf(y)-ab\,\tfrac{\mu}{2}\|x-y\|^2.f(ax+by)≤af(x)+bf(y)−ab2μ∥x−y∥2.
  1. The gradient is LLL-Lipschitz: ∥∇f(x)−∇f(y)∥≤L∥x−y∥\|\nabla f(x)-\nabla f(y)\|\le L\|x-y\|∥∇f(x)−∇f(y)∥≤L∥x−y∥ for all x,yx,yx,y.
  2. 0<σ0<\sigma0<σ and σ≤μ/L\sigma\le \mu/Lσ≤μ/L, where μ/L\mu/Lμ/L is taken to be 000 when L=0L=0L=0.

The conclusion is that for every x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^nx∈Rn,

f(x−σγ(x) ∇f(x))  ≤  f(x)−σ γ(x)2 ∥∇f(x)∥2.f\big(x-\sigma\gamma(x)\,\nabla f(x)\big)\;\le\; f(x) - \frac{\sigma\,\gamma(x)}{2}\,\|\nabla f(x)\|^2.f(x−σγ(x)∇f(x))≤f(x)−2σγ(x)∥∇f(x)∥2.

Degenerate cases.

  • If L=0L=0L=0, then μ/L=0\mu/L=0μ/L=0 by the division convention, so hypothesis 5 would require 0<σ≤00<\sigma\le 00<σ≤0 and cannot be satisfied.
  • If L<0L<0L<0, then μ/L<0\mu/L<0μ/L<0, and hypothesis 5 is again unsatisfiable.
  • In both of those cases the statement is vacuous.
  • If ∇f(x)=0\nabla f(x)=0∇f(x)=0, then γ(x)=0\gamma(x)=0γ(x)=0 and the claim is f(x)≤f(x)f(x)\le f(x)f(x)≤f(x).
  • If n=0n=0n=0, the space is the single point 000, hypothesis 4 holds for any LLL, and the conclusion is f(0)≤f(0)f(0)\le f(0)f(0)≤f(0).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
