Consider a stochastic program with fixed recourse (2.1): a fixed mˉ×nˉ\bar m \times \bar nmˉ×nˉ recourse matrix WWW of full row rank and random data ξ=(c,q,p,T)\xi = (c, q, p, T)ξ=(c,q,p,T) with law μ\muμ, a probability measure. Let Ξ~p,T\tilde\Xi_{p,T}Ξ~p,T be the support of the marginal law of (p,T)(p, T)(p,T) and

K2={x∈Rn∣p−Tx∈pos⁡W for all (p,T)∈Ξ~p,T},pos⁡W={Wy∣y≥0},K_2 = \{x \in \mathbb{R}^n \mid p - Tx \in \operatorname{pos} W \text{ for all } (p,T) \in \tilde\Xi_{p,T}\}, \qquad \operatorname{pos} W = \{Wy \mid y \ge 0\},K2={x∈Rn∣p−Tx∈posW for all (p,T)∈Ξ~p,T},posW={Wy∣y≥0},

the set of constraints induced on the first-stage decision xxx (Corollary 4.5). Suppose that

  1. TTT is fixed: there is a matrix T0T_0T0 with T(ξ)=T0T(\xi) = T_0T(ξ)=T0 with probability one;
  2. ξ\xiξ satisfies the weak covariance condition of Definition 2.2.

Then K2K_2K2 is a closed convex polyhedron: there are finitely many linear inequalities Gx≥αGx \ge \alphaGx≥α with

K2={x∣Gx≥α}.K_2 = \{x \mid Gx \ge \alpha\}.K2={x∣Gx≥α}.

This is the result that makes the deterministic equivalent program of a stochastic program with fixed recourse and fixed technology matrix a program with finitely many deterministic linear constraints, even when the right-hand side p(ξ)p(\xi)p(ξ) has an unbounded continuous distribution. The set K2K_2K2 may be empty.

Formalization Note. "TTT is fixed" is read as "T(ξ)T(\xi)T(ξ) is almost surely equal to one matrix T0T_0T0", which is weaker than pointwise constancy and so makes the theorem stronger. Full row rank of WWW is the paper's standing assumption (p. 312); it is not needed for this conclusion. "Convex polyhedron" is the solution set of finitely many weak linear inequalities, the form (4.12) the paper's proof produces, and it includes ∅\emptyset∅ and Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn. Closedness and convexity are stated as separate conjuncts to mirror the paper's wording.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
