Let q∈Δnq\in\Delta_nq∈Δn with q(j)>0q(j)>0q(j)>0 for all jjj, let β>0\beta>0β>0 and v∈Rnv\in\mathbb R^nv∈Rn, and let σ\sigmaσ be the dual function (47), vmax⁡=max⁡jv(j)v_{\max}=\max_j v(j)vmax=maxjv(j) and Q(v)=∑j: v(j)=vmax⁡q(j)Q(v)=\sum_{j:\,v(j)=v_{\max}}q(j)Q(v)=∑j:v(j)=vmaxq(j). If

β  ≥  −log⁡Q(v)\beta \;\ge\; -\log Q(v)β≥−logQ(v)

(equivalently σ′(0)=β+log⁡Q(v)≥0\sigma'(0)=\beta+\log Q(v)\ge 0σ′(0)=β+logQ(v)≥0), then

  1. inf⁡λ>0σ(λ)=vmax⁡\inf_{\lambda>0}\sigma(\lambda)=v_{\max}infλ>0σ(λ)=vmax, so λ=0\lambda=0λ=0 is optimal for the dual;
  2. the worst-case value of pTvp^{\mathsf T}vpTv over P={p∈Δn:D(p∥q)≤β}\mathcal P=\{p\in\Delta_n : D(p\|q)\le\beta\}P={p∈Δn:D(p∥q)≤β} is vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax, and it is attained.

For such β\betaβ robustness disregards the prior information carried by qqq. Unlike the threshold max⁡i(−log⁡qi)\max_i(-\log q_i)maxi(−logqi) of §6.1, the threshold −log⁡Q(v)-\log Q(v)−logQ(v) depends on vvv.

Formalization Note The infimum is stated with IsGLB over {σ(λ):λ>0}\{\sigma(\lambda):\lambda>0\}{σ(λ):λ>0}; it is not attained at any λ>0\lambda>0λ>0 in general, which is why the paper speaks of λ=0\lambda=0λ=0. The paper's first sentence has the non-strict condition σ′(0)≥0\sigma'(0)\ge 0σ′(0)≥0 and its second sentence the strict β>−log⁡Q(v)\beta>-\log Q(v)β>−logQ(v); the statement here uses the non-strict version, which contains both.

/-- §6.3 (Nilim–El Ghaoui 2005, p. 792). For `q ∈ Δₙ` with `q > 0` and `β > 0`: if
`β ≥ −log Q(v)` (equivalently `σ'(0) = β + log Q(v) ≥ 0`), then `λ = 0` is optimal for the dual:
the infimum of `σ` over `λ > 0` is `v_max`, and the worst-case value of `pᵀv` over the entropy set
`𝒫 = {p ∈ Δₙ : D(p‖q) ≤ β}` is `v_max` (attained). -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N, let q,v∈Rnq, v \in \mathbb{R}^nq,v∈Rn and let β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}β∈R. Assume:

  • qqq lies in the probability simplex Δn\Delta_nΔn (qj≥0q_j \ge 0qj≥0, ∑jqj=1\sum_j q_j = 1∑jqj=1);
  • qj>0q_j > 0qj>0 for every jjj;
  • β>0\beta > 0β>0;
  • −log⁡Q(v)≤β-\log Q(v) \le \beta−logQ(v)≤β.

Notation.

  • vmax⁡=max⁡jvjv_{\max} = \max_j v_jvmax=maxjvj.
  • Q(v)=∑j:vj=vmax⁡qjQ(v) = \sum_{j : v_j = v_{\max}} q_jQ(v)=∑j:vj=vmaxqj. Under the hypotheses 0<Q(v)≤10 < Q(v) \le 10<Q(v)≤1, so −log⁡Q(v)≥0-\log Q(v) \ge 0−logQ(v)≥0 is an ordinary logarithm.
  • The dual function is σ(λ)=λlog⁡(∑jqjevj/λ)+βλ\sigma(\lambda) = \lambda \log\big(\sum_j q_j e^{v_j/\lambda}\big) + \beta\lambdaσ(λ)=λlog(∑jqjevj/λ)+βλ.
  • D(p ∥ q)=∑jpjlog⁡(pj/qj)D(p\,\|\,q) = \sum_j p_j\log(p_j/q_j)D(p∥q)=∑jpjlog(pj/qj), where a term with pj=0p_j = 0pj=0 contributes 000.
  • B(q,β)={p∈Δn:D(p ∥ q)≤β}\mathcal{B}(q,\beta) = \{p \in \Delta_n : D(p\,\|\,q) \le \beta\}B(q,β)={p∈Δn:D(p∥q)≤β}.

Conclusion (dual). vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax is the greatest lower bound of {σ(λ):λ>0}\{\sigma(\lambda) : \lambda > 0\}{σ(λ):λ>0}. That is:

  • σ(λ)≥vmax⁡\sigma(\lambda) \ge v_{\max}σ(λ)≥vmax for every λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0;
  • no larger number is a lower bound.

It is not asserted that some λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0 attains vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax.

Conclusion (worst case). vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax is the greatest element of {∑jpjvj:p∈B(q,β)}\{\sum_j p_j v_j : p \in \mathcal{B}(q,\beta)\}{∑jpjvj:p∈B(q,β)}. That is:

  • ∑jpjvj≤vmax⁡\sum_j p_j v_j \le v_{\max}∑jpjvj≤vmax for every p∈B(q,β)p \in \mathcal{B}(q,\beta)p∈B(q,β);
  • equality holds for some p∈B(q,β)p \in \mathcal{B}(q,\beta)p∈B(q,β).

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n = 0n=0: excluded by the simplex hypothesis.
  • n=1n = 1n=1, or vvv constant:
    • Q(v)=1Q(v) = 1Q(v)=1, so the last hypothesis reduces to 0≤β0 \le \beta0≤β, which β>0\beta > 0β>0 already implies.
    • σ(λ)=vmax⁡+βλ\sigma(\lambda) = v_{\max} + \beta\lambdaσ(λ)=vmax+βλ, whose infimum over λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0 is vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax and is not attained.
  • Unique maximiser j0j_0j0: the hypothesis becomes β≥−log⁡qj0\beta \ge -\log q_{j_0}β≥−logqj0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
