Under Assumption 1, let α∈(0,1)\alpha \in (0,1)α∈(0,1) and λ∈[0,1]\lambda \in [0,1]λ∈[0,1]. For any J,Jˉ∈L2(S,D)J, \bar J \in L_2(S,D)J,Jˉ∈L2(S,D),

∥T(λ)J−T(λ)Jˉ∥D≤α(1−λ)1−αλ∥J−Jˉ∥D≤α∥J−Jˉ∥D.\|T^{(\lambda)}J - T^{(\lambda)}\bar J\|_D \le \frac{\alpha(1-\lambda)}{1-\alpha\lambda}\|J - \bar J\|_D \le \alpha\|J - \bar J\|_D.∥T(λ)J−T(λ)Jˉ∥D≤1−αλα(1−λ)∥J−Jˉ∥D≤α∥J−Jˉ∥D.

So T(λ)T^{(\lambda)}T(λ) is a contraction of L2(S,D)L_2(S,D)L2(S,D) with modulus α(1−λ)/(1−αλ)\alpha(1-\lambda)/(1-\alpha\lambda)α(1−λ)/(1−αλ). At λ=1\lambda = 1λ=1 the modulus is 000, since T(1)T^{(1)}T(1) is the constant map J↦J∗J \mapsto J^*J↦J∗.

Formalization Note. The page says "Under Assumption 1(a)". The statement here assumes all of Assumption 1, because T(λ)JT^{(\lambda)}JT(λ)J is only shown to be defined on L2(S,D)L_2(S,D)L2(S,D) under Assumption 1 (Lemma 3, which the proof uses) and T(1)J=J∗T^{(1)}J = J^*T(1)J=J∗ needs Assumption 1(b)–(c). Both inequalities of the chain are stated.

/-- **Lemma 4** (Tsitsiklis & Van Roy, LIDS-P-2322 (1996), p. 14). For any `J, J̄ ∈ L₂(S, D)` and
`λ ∈ [0, 1]`,
`‖T^(λ)J − T^(λ)J̄‖_D ≤ (α(1 − λ)/(1 − αλ)) ‖J − J̄‖_D ≤ α ‖J − J̄‖_D`.
The page says "Under Assumption 1(a)"; the hypothesis here is all of Assumption 1, under which
`T^(λ)` is defined on `L₂(S, D)` (Lemma 3) and `T^(1)J = J*`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
