Setting. Fix M,d∈NM,d\in\mathbb{N}M,d∈N. The children of a vertex are labelled 0,1,…,M0,1,\dots,M0,1,…,M: child MMM is the default child, and 0,…,M−10,\dots,M-10,…,M−1 are the nondefault children, ordered as integers. A node is a finite sequence PPP of children (the path from the root) of length ∣P∣<d|P|<d∣P∣<d, and a leaf is a sequence of children of length exactly ddd; P⌢jP\frown jP⌢j denotes PPP followed by the child jjj. Bits are written 000 (false) and 111 (true). For β∈N\beta\in\mathbb{N}β∈N and y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R}y∈R let

κβ(y)=⌊2β+2 (y−⌊y⌋)⌋∈{0,1,…,2β+2−1}\kappa_\beta(y)=\big\lfloor 2^{\beta+2}\,(y-\lfloor y\rfloor)\big\rfloor\in\{0,1,\dots,2^{\beta+2}-1\}κβ(y)=⌊2β+2(y−⌊y⌋)⌋∈{0,1,…,2β+2−1}

be the index of the cell containing yyy in the 111-periodic grid of mesh 2−β−22^{-\beta-2}2−β−2.

Window data. Fix also g,r0∈Ng,r_0\in\mathbb{N}g,r0∈N. Call a sequence of children P≠∅P\neq\varnothingP=∅ with ∣P∣≤d|P|\le d∣P∣≤d an edge (it stands for the edge into its last vertex). A window datum WWW consists of maps r:N→Nr:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}r:N→N and a,b,b∗a,b,b^*a,b,b∗ from finite sequences of children to N\mathbb{N}N such that, for all edges P,QP,QP,Q:

  • (i) r(d+1−∣P∣)≥1r(d+1-|P|)\ge 1r(d+1−∣P∣)≥1 and r(d+1−∣P∣)≥r0r(d+1-|P|)\ge r_0r(d+1−∣P∣)≥r0;
  • (ii) a(P)≥3a(P)\ge 3a(P)≥3;
  • (iii) b(P)+1=a(P)+r(d+1−∣P∣)b(P)+1=a(P)+r(d+1-|P|)b(P)+1=a(P)+r(d+1−∣P∣), so the window {a(P),…,b(P)}\{a(P),\dots,b(P)\}{a(P),…,b(P)} of PPP consists of r(d+1−∣P∣)r(d+1-|P|)r(d+1−∣P∣) consecutive scale indices;
  • (iv) if PPP is a proper prefix of QQQ, then b(P)+g<a(Q)b(P)+g<a(Q)b(P)+g<a(Q);
  • (v) if P=V⌢iP=V\frown iP=V⌢i and Q=V⌢j⌢V′Q=V\frown j\frown V'Q=V⌢j⌢V′ with i<ji<ji<j (for any sequences V,V′V,V'V,V′), then b(P)+g<a(Q)b(P)+g<a(Q)b(P)+g<a(Q);
  • (vi) if PPP is a prefix of QQQ, then b(P)≤b(Q)≤b∗(P)b(P)\le b(Q)\le b^*(P)b(P)≤b(Q)≤b∗(P);
  • (vii) b∗(P)+1≤a(P)+2 r(d+1−∣P∣)b^*(P)+1\le a(P)+2\,r(d+1-|P|)b∗(P)+1≤a(P)+2r(d+1−∣P∣).

For a node UUU, all child edges U⌢iU\frown iU⌢i have windows of the same length rU=r(d−∣U∣)r_U=r(d-|U|)rU=r(d−∣U∣).

Addresses. The selector table of a node QQQ and a nondefault child jjj has resolution b(Q⌢j)b(Q\frown j)b(Q⌢j); its cells are addressed by the pairs ((Q,j),m)((Q,j),m)((Q,j),m) with m<2b(Q⌢j)+2m<2^{b(Q\frown j)+2}m<2b(Q⌢j)+2. The terminal table of a leaf LLL has resolution b(L)b(L)b(L); its cells are addressed by the pairs (L,m)(L,m)(L,m) with m<2b(L)+2m<2^{b(L)+2}m<2b(L)+2. Addresses of different tables are different even when their cell indices coincide. For x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}x∈R the center address of the selector table (Q,j)(Q,j)(Q,j) is αx(Q,j)=((Q,j),κb(Q⌢j)(x))\alpha_x(Q,j)=\big((Q,j),\kappa_{b(Q\frown j)}(x)\big)αx(Q,j)=((Q,j),κb(Q⌢j)(x)).

Local trials. Fix a node PPP. A local trial at PPP is a pair z=(i,j)z=(i,j)z=(i,j) with 0≤i<M0\le i<M0≤i<M and 0≤j<rP0\le j<r_P0≤j<rP; its scale index n(z)=a(P⌢i)+jn(z)=a(P\frown i)+jn(z)=a(P⌢i)+j runs through the window of the child edge P⌢iP\frown iP⌢i. For t∈Rt\in\mathbb{R}t∈R the trial reads the selector table (P,i)(P,i)(P,i) at the shifted point x+t 2−n(z)x+t\,2^{-n(z)}x+t2−n(z), i.e. at the address βx,t(z)=((P,i),κb(P⌢i)(x+t 2−n(z)))\beta_{x,t}(z)=\big((P,i),\kappa_{b(P\frown i)}(x+t\,2^{-n(z)})\big)βx,t(z)=((P,i),κb(P⌢i)(x+t2−n(z))).

Theorem. Let WWW be a window datum, PPP a node, x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}x∈R and t∈[1,2]t\in[1,2]t∈[1,2]. Then the combined address map on the disjoint union of all pairs (Q,j)(Q,j)(Q,j) (a node and a nondefault child) and all local trials at PPP,

αx⊔βx,t: {(Q,j)} ⊔ ({0,…,M−1}×{0,…,rP−1})⟶{selector addresses},\alpha_x\sqcup\beta_{x,t}:\ \big\{(Q,j)\big\}\ \sqcup\ \big(\{0,\dots,M-1\}\times\{0,\dots,r_P-1\}\big)\longrightarrow\{\text{selector addresses}\},αx⊔βx,t: {(Q,j)} ⊔ ({0,…,M−1}×{0,…,rP−1})⟶{selector addresses},

is injective. Equivalently: the center addresses of all selector tables are pairwise distinct, the trial addresses at PPP are pairwise distinct, and no trial address equals any center address (including the center address of the table that the trial itself reads).

This is the freshness condition for the exact fixed-scale computation: when all selector entries are independent fair bits, conditioning on the complete center exposure (the bits at all addresses αx(Q,j)\alpha_x(Q,j)αx(Q,j)) leaves the bits read by the local trials at PPP independent and fair.

Formalization Note The statement is Function.Injective (Sum.elim (fun e => selectorAddress (selectorEndpoints W) e.1 e.2 x) (localSelectorAddress W P x t)) on (Node M d × Fin M) ⊕ LocalTrial W P, where LocalTrial W P = Fin M × Fin (W.r (d - P.val.length)) and the scale index is localIndex W P. The selector resolution of (Q,j)(Q,j)(Q,j) is selectorEndpoints W Q j = W.b (Q.val ++ [j.castSucc]).
